WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Dana Dobbie has been named one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given to the nation's top player in lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Award Foundation announced today. Dobbie leads Maryland with 50 goals, 68 draw controls, and 37 ground balls.
Dobbie is the third finalist from Maryland since the award's inception in 2001. Associate head coach Jen Adams was the first-ever recipient of lacrosse's most prestigious award in her senior season and Kelly Coppedge was named a finalist back in 2003 and 2004.
The other four finalists are Caroline Cryer from Duke, Mary Key from Johns Hopkins, and Kristen Kjellman and Hannah Nielsen from Northwestern. Kjellman won the Tewaaraton Trophy last season.
Dobbie has been a force in every facet of the game in her first season in College Park after transferring from Ohio University. She leads the team with 50 goals, 68 draw controls, and 37 ground balls. She has also been credited with four game-winning goals, tops on the team. Her 24 caused turnovers are second on the squad.
The Guelph, Ontario native has helped Maryland rank in the top 10 nationally in both offense and draw controls. The Terps' 14.83 draws per game ranks second and their 14.83 goals scored average is sixth. Dobbie ranks fourth on the individual ledger in draw controls at 3.78 per outing and is tied for 28th in goals with 2.78.
Dobbie has scored six or more goals three times this season and scored a career-high seven times at Dartmouth on March 16. She was named the 2007 ACC Player of the Year on March 26.
The winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy will be announced on May 30 at the Seventh Annual Warrior Tewaaraton Trophy Awards held at the National Geographic Society Headquarters.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with The University Club of Washington, DC, formally established the "Tewaaraton Trophy" on August 29, 2000. Today, the Tewaaraton Trophy is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Simply, it is the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. With the inaugural presentation taking place at the University Club of Washington, DC in June of 2001, the Tewaaraton Trophy is now presented annually following the collegiate season at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization (EIN#52-2268574) and relies on the support of past and present lacrosse players, coaches, and enthusiasts, as well as corporations to fund its efforts. All gifts to the Foundation are deductible to the extent permissible by law. The University Club and the Tewaaraton Award Foundation are proud to promote the sport of lacrosse and to sponsor this distinctive award for young men and women attending our nation's colleges and universities.
