For the fourth-consecutive year, former Maryland Terrapin Shay Doron was named to the Jewish Sports Review Women's College Basketball All-America team. Doron completed her eligibility in March and was drafted by the WNBA's New York Liberty. She is currently participating in the team's training camp.
Shay Doron (Ramat Hasharon, Israel/Christ the King [N.Y.]) legacy at Maryland is apparent all over the record book and honors lists. She is second on the program's all-time scoring list, netting 1,878 points over her four years. Head coach Brenda Frese's first recruit in College Park, Doron was a three-time All-ACC selection, garnering first-team honors as a sophomore.
Doron has received a number of honors from the Jewish community throughout her career at Maryland, including being inducted to the Greater Washington Jewish Community Center Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
This season, Doron scored in double figures for the fourth-straight year, averaging 11.8 points per game, while grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game. She was a preseason candidate for numerous national player of the year honors, including the WBCA's Wade Trophy, the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Award.
Doron, who had been a four-year starter at Maryland and helped the team with its first-ever national championship in 2006, continues to participate in the NY Liberty's training camp, working towards securing a spot on the team's roster. The Liberty were in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and scrimmaged the Washington Mystics. A fan favorite while in College Park, Doron received cheers while on the court from Mystics fans. She also received support from the Maryland coaching staff and her former Terrapin teammates, who were in attendance at Trinity College.
