COLLEGE PARK. Md. (AP) - Marah Strickland scored 14 points and No. 3 Maryland rebounded from a stunning opening-game loss to beat Delaware State 73-46 on Sunday.
"We played well in spurts. The disappointing thing is that we lost a lot of effort and intensity in the second half," said Frese. "There are areas where we need to improve and we don't have a lot of time to fix and correct."
Marissa Coleman and freshman Lynetta Kizer added 13 points each as the Terps (1-1), bounced back from Friday's loss at TCU. It was Maryland's first season-opening loss since 1998-99.
"I think it was just a learning experience," Kizer said. "From my point of view, it was the best thing to happen to us. We are starting early to see what our competition level is and where we need to grow from."
Transfer Demauria Liles added 11 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double as a Terrapin.
"It's the best thing to take the taste out of our mouth, and to be able to go back and compete," Frese said of the win. "I think that's why I liked our competitiveness in the first half."
Delaware State (1-1) was a preseason pick to finish second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, but was no match for one of the top programs in the country. The Hornets fell to 0-10 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference teams.
Keyhana Wakefield led the Hornets with 15 points.
Maryland, which shot just 34.4 percent in the TCU loss, improved to 40.4 percent against the Hornets and was 29-for-39 from the free-throw line. The Terps also outrebounded the Hornets 49-21.
Maryland missed its first six shots of the game before Coleman and Kizer broke the ice with a pair of baskets inside, each drawing fouls and making the free throw to pull the Terps into a 6-2 lead. Those baskets started a 31-9 run that put Maryland ahead 31-11. They led 37-17 at halftime.
Maryland's biggest lead was 67-32 with 8 minutes left.
