Three Terps Named to SI All-American Team
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver were named among the top 17 women's basketball players listed on the Wooden Award ballot, the Lost Angeles Athletic Club announced on Monday. The pair are finalists for the award, which is presented to the nation's top collegiate player.
The winner of the award will be announced on Saturday, April 12 during a special ceremony at the L.A. Athletic Club. A panel of more than 300 voters, comprised of sports media members and college basketball experts from around the nation will cast their votes for the five-member women's All-American team and Player of the Year. All players on the ballots have proven to their universities they are making progress towards graduation and are maintaining a cumulative 2.0 grade point average. The top five male and female vote getters will be invited to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony and will receive a contribution from the LA Athletic Club for their university's general scholarship fund.
Maryland and Connecticut were the only two teams with two balloted players. The Big East Conference had four players chosen to the list, followed by the ACC, SEC and Big 12 with three each. The Sun Belt had two, and the Pac-10 and Big Sky had one apiece.
Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) was the ACC's Player of the Year and was voted to the All-ACC team for the fourth-consecutive year, the first women's player in Maryland history to garner all-conference honors every year. She is one of only 10 players in the history of the ACC to be named to the first team three times.
Langhorne is second on the team with 16.7 points per game, while leading the team with 9.2 rebounds per game. She is ranked in the top five in the ACC in both categories. She currently leads the nation in field goal percentage, knocking down 64.6 percent of her attempts. The only men's or women's player in school history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, she is the program's scoring and rebounding leader.
Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) is having a career-season to date. She is leading the team with 16.7 points per game and leads the ACC with 7.5 assists per game, which ranks fourth in the ACC. Dishing out 248 assists on the season, she is one assist from tying the ACC's single-season mark, which has stood since 1978. Toliver was named first team All-ACC, making her second-straight appearance on the all-conference list. She is a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is presented annually to the top point guard in the nation.
Maryland is 30-3 on the season, its second 30-win campaign in the history of the program. Ranked fifth in the nation, it advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the fifth-straight year over the weekend. The Terps will wait for the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket on Monday, March 17. They will play its first and second rounds games at Comcast Center on March 23 and 25. Tickets for the games are available through the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
