COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head coach Cathy Reese delivered her third child, a girl, on March 12 and the No. 2 women's lacrosse team celebrated with a 17-9 win against Richmond at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Cayden Elizabeth weighed in at nine pounds, four ounces while senior Dana Dobbie scored five goals to lead the Terrapins.
Cayden, the third child for Reese and her husband Brian, was born at 3:55 p.m. at a local hospital. Cayden joins the family with older brothers Riley and Brody. Both Reese and Cayden are healthy.
The Terps heard of the news but still had to get to business later in the night. Dobbie added four draw controls and two caused turnovers to her five goals. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden dished out a career-high four assists and had four ground balls. Senior Casey Magor added a hat trick for the Terps with an assist and classmate Katie Princiotto chipped in with two goals and two assists.
Senior Kelly Kasper added a goal and two helpers while sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber recorded a pair of goals and an assist.
Princiotto scored the first goal of the game two minutes in, but Richmond responded with a pair of goals to take an early 2-1 lead, its only one of the game. Jules Nicola and Mandy Friend were the goal scorers with Lexie Marrocco and Allison Furstenburg chipping in with the assists.
The lead lasted for only 17 seconds though as Dobbie used a pass from Princiotto to tie the game back up five minutes in. Maryland went on to score five more unanswered goals and the defense held the Spiders scoreless for 20:08 to give the Terps a 7-2 cushion. Dobbie scored three goals in the seven-goal run.
Richmond would add two more late goals and Magor scored with one second left in the half to give the Terps an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Maryland began the second half with five-straight goals to build the lead to nine, 13-4, with 19:41 to go in the game. Spinnenweber scored all three of her points during the run.
Richmond finally broke through at the 18:50 mark when Friend dished to Claire Cunniff who scored for the Spiders. Two more Maryland goals would push the lead to 15-5 and Richmond could not get much closer. The Spiders moved within eight goals twice but that is as close as they would get.
Richmond (2-5) was led by Friend who had three goals and two assists while Cunniff scored four times. Erica Marrocco was credited with 12 saves in goal.
Maryland (5-1) will complete its home stand on Saturday when it hosts No. 12 Dartmouth at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex at 1:00 p.m.
