BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Katie Princiotto recorded a career-high five goals to lead the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 win against No. 15 Johns Hopkins on March 17 at Homewood Field. Classmate Kelly Kasper added a goal and four assists to go along with four draw controls.
Senior Dana Dobbie chipped in with a hat trick while sophomore Ali Perkins tied her career high with three assists that all came in the first half. Senior Allie Buote was credited with seven saves in the win.
Maryland jumped out to a huge lead for the second-straight game as it started the afternoon with an 8-1 run. The Terps' offense worked efficiently while the defense kept the Blue Jays out of sync, only allowing three goals in the first half with two of them coming on free positions.
The first two goals came 14 seconds apart as Princiotto and senior Casey Magor used identical moves from the right side of the cage, wrapping shots past the goalie in the third minute.
Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden added the third goal when Kasper found her open in front of the cage. Kasper then assisted on Maryland's fourth goal after she was taken down making a run towards goal. On the ensuing free position, Kasper dished to Princiotto to her left who scored the goal.
Kirby Houck ended the Johns Hopkins drought when she converted a free position with 10:43 left in the half. Perkins came into the game off the bench and made an immediate impact, dishing out assists on the next three goals for Maryland to help build the lead to 7-1.
McFadden and Princiotto completed the Maryland run as McFadden was fouled on the left side and awarded a free position. Like Kasper earlier, McFadden chose to dish to Princiotto who connected on her third goal of the half.
The Blue Jays scored the last two goals of the half in the final three minutes to cut the lead to 8-3 heading into the break. Sam Schrum scored the first off of a pass from Brett Bathras while cutting down the right side and then Lauren Schwarzman converted a free position with just four seconds left.
Johns Hopkins slowed down the Maryland attack and scored some more goals of its own in the early going of the second half. Schwarzmann opened the half with her second-straight free position goal 3:39 in, but then freshman Sarah Mollison countered with a goal of her own a little over a minute later.
The Blue Jays cut the lead to three, 9-6, with 21:05 to go in the game when Houck and Schrum scored twice in a row. Maryland was able to pull away for good after that though, scoring six unanswered goals to take an insurmountable 15-6 lead with under three minutes to go in the game.
Princiotto scored two goals and added an assist during that span while Kasper dished out two assists and added a goal of her own to aid the Terps.
Johns Hopkins (2-4) had three women score twice in Houck, Schrum, and Schwarzmann. Bathras had two assists and Julianne Wisner stopped seven shots in 47:31 of work in the cage.
The Terps (7-1) will make their first ever trip to Stanford, ranked No. 11 in the nation, on Saturday, March 22.
