Two Terps Earn WBCA Region All-American Honors

March 19, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Maryland women's basketball players Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver were two of seven players named to the State Farm/WBCA Region 2 All-America team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced on Wednesday. It is the third time Langhorne receives the honor in her career.

The two were among the 52 players named to eight regional teams. The State Farm Coaches' All-America team selection committee will review the candidates and announce 40 finalists who will be in the running for the 10 member State Farm All-America Team, which will be announced at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Fla., in early April.

The 2008 ACC Player of the Year, senior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) becomes the first player in school history to earn the regional honor three times. Second on the team in scoring with 16.5 points per game, while grabbing a team-leading 9.2 rebounds per game, Langhorne broke the program's scoring and rebounding records this season. She is the only men's or women's player in school history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She had her jersey honored on Feb. 24 at the conclusion of the Terps' game vs. Florida State. Langhorne is also second in the nation in field goal shooting, making 64.6 percent of her attempts.

Junior Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) receives region nods for the first time. She is the team's leader with 16.8 points per game, while ranking fourth in the nation with 7.5 assists per game. She is one assist from tying the ACC record for assists in a season, having dished out 248 in 33 games this season. Toliver has been named a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, an honor given to the nation's top collegiate women's point guard.

Both Langhorne and Toliver were first team All-ACC picks. Langhorne became the first player in school history, and one of 10 in ACC history, to garner first team all-conference nods three times.

Other Region 2 selections were Duke's Chante Black, North Carolina's Erlana Larkins and LaToya Pringle, NC State's Khadijah Whittington and Virginia's Monica Wright.

The Terrapins are preparing for the start of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland hosts the first and second rounds at Comcast Center on March 23 and 25. The Terps, who received a final No. 5 ranking in the Associated Press poll, are the No. 1 seed in the Spokane Region. They open the postseason against 16th-seeded Coppin State on Sunday, March 23.
