CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Kelly Kasper scored four goals and classmate Lauren Cohen had two goals and two assists to lead the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 win against No. 9 North Carolina on April 12 at Fetzer Field. Senior Allie Buote was stellar in goal for the Terrapins with 10 saves.
Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden chipped in with a goal and an assist as did freshman Sarah Mollison.
Maryland built a 4-1 lead through the first 11:38 of the game behind a pair of goals from Kasper and the strong play of Buote. McFadden scored the first goal of the game when she was taken down in the fan trying to make a break towards goal. She connected on her free position to give the Terps the lead.
Buote then made consecutive saves as she stopped a tough shot on the ground by Megan Bosica and then turned away a free position shot by Jenn Taylor.
The Terps took advantage of Buote's play in the cage as they scored in transition after the free position save. Kasper made the most of an opportunity as her defender slipped. Kasper ran around her and beat Amanda Barnes to put Maryland up 2-0.
Corey Donohoe scored the first goal for the Tar Heels at the 22:39 mark as she put home a pass from Kristen Taylor but the Terps responded as Kasper set up Cohen for a score to make it 3-1.
Dobbie won the ensuing draw and it paid off immediately as freshman Sarah Mollison dished to Kasper cutting down the middle for the goal which came just 13 seconds later.
Meg Freshwater cut the deficit to 4-2 when she took the ball the length of the field and knifed through the Maryland defense for an unassisted goal with 12:01 left in the half.
Dobbie responded six minutes later to push the cushion back to three goals. Cohen worked her way around the cage on the left side and fired a shot from point blank range. Barnes made the save and the ball deflected straight into the air. Dobbie used her height advantage and reached for the ball, collected herself, then shot low to put the ball in the back of the net.
North Carolina scored two-straight goals to pull within one with 4:14 left. Chelsea Parks recorded a goal at the 5:13 mark and then Kelly Taylor went low a minute later to make it 5-4.
The Terps would score the final goal of the half when Cohen found Princiotto from behind the net to give the Terps a 6-4 edge heading into halftime.
Kasper scored the first goal of the second half 2:37 in, her third of the game, as she made a move on the left side of the cage to get herself open for the score.
The Terps' defense held the Tar Heels scoreless for the first 13:29 but North Carolina broke through when Kelly Taylor found her sister Kristen for a goal to make it 7-5 with 16:31 left in the game.
Maryland responded with a goal a little over two minutes later following a forced turnover in transition by the Tar Heels. After pulling back on transition and slowing down, Cohen found a cutting Kasper open in the middle for the score to push the lead to 8-5.
Kristen Taylor scored with 9:44 left on a dish from Russell and then UNC nearly pulled within one but the pipe foiled a free position chance for the Tar Heels. On the ensuing possession, Kasper blazed past the North Carolina defense and found a wide open Cohen for the score to keep the lead at three, 9-6, with 8:46 to go.
The Terps opened up its largest lead of the game with just 2:31 left when McFadden found a wide open Mollison on the left side for her first goal of the evening.
Chelsea Parks scored a free position goal with 1:08 left to make it 10-7 and the Tar Heels won the ensuing draw. North Carolina got another free opportunity chance and made the most of it again as Donohoe scored on a pass from Julia Ryan to pull within two with 46 seconds left.
Cohen picked up the next draw thoughand the Terps were able to run out the remaining time to hold onto the win.
The Tar Heels (10-4, 2-3 ACC) were led by Kristen Taylor who had two goals and an assist. Donohoe and Parks both scored twice.
Maryland (12-1, 3-1 ACC) returns home on Wednesday night when it hosts No. 6 Georgetown at 8:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game will be televised nationally by the CBS College Sports Network.
