Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team built an 8-3 lead early in the second half but could not hold on as No. 3 Virginia forced overtime and eventually won, 10-9, on April 27 in the 2008 ACC Championship. Ashley McCulloch scored the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers in overtime.

Virginia was down 8-3 with 26:26 to play in regulation but scored six unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead with 4:27 left. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden scored the game-tying goal with 1:58 to play to force overtime.

Senior Dana Dobbie scored three goals in the game and added an assist and five draw controls. Classmate Kelly Kasper scored twice and assisted on a pair while senior Lauren Cohen scored two goals. McFadden had a goal and an assist and senior Allie Buote was credited with eight saves in goal.

The two teams traded the first four goals of the game for a 2-2 tie through the first 22:05. Cohen got on the board first three minutes in but Jenny Hauser responded with a free position goal 20 seconds later.

Dobbie scored for Maryland at 22:55 to give the lead back to the Terps. McFadden handled the ball on the left side of the fan and Dobbie made a run behind her. McFadden flipped to Dobbie who fired a shot for the goal.

Jenny Hauser then assisted on Brittany Kalkstein's first goal at the 22:05 mark to tie the game 2-2. Hauser was taken down and awarded a free position, but she chose to pass to the wide open Kalkstein on the left side.

Virginia came dangerously close to picking up its first lead at the 21:20 mark, but Buote made a tough save on a free position to keep the Cavaliers at bay.

Maryland then rattled off three-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 14:41 left in the half. Kasper made a shifty move around her defender for the first goal of the run with 19:28 showing on the scoreboard. She then assisted on Cohen's second goal of the day as she fed her from behind the net. Cohen got a hold off the ball in tight space and finished the one-timer to put the Terps up 4-2.

On the next draw, McFadden came out with the ball in a crowd and starting the Maryland break. She found Dobbie on the right side of the field who then connected a pass to Casey Magor in the middle who scored to make it 5-2.

Virginia was forced to take a timeout to try and stop the run and did just that. Ashley McCulloch scored at the 14:41 mark to cut the deficit to 5-3. She handled the ball on the left side of the crease and scored the goal unassisted.

The Terps would score the final two goals of the half though to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room. Dobbie scored unassisted using a nice move on the left side to free herself.

Following a free position save by Buote, Maryland slowed the pace on offense and found the back of the net when Dobbie used a pass from Kasper to score.

The Terps came out of the gate much like they did in the first half as Buote came up with another big save less than three minutes in. Maryland turned that into a goal as Kasper made a move down the middle of the fan to put the Terps up 8-3.

Virginia responded with six unanswered goals to take its first lead of the day, 9-8, with 4:27 left. Kaitlin Duff got things going with a free position goal with 21:27 left in the game to cut the Terps' lead to 8-4. Then Hauser connected on another free position two minutes later.

Megan O'Malley scored her first goal of the game when McCulloch found her streaking down the middle of the Terps' defense for the score to make it 8-6 with 18:00 to go.

Following the Terps' fourth yellow card of the game, Maryland was forced to play with 11 players and the Cavaliers capitalized. Shortly after the foul, Brittany Kalkstein found McCulloch for a goal to make it 8-7 with 12:25 to play.

Blair Weymouth then tied the game with a free position goal at the 10:16 mark with the Terps still playing a person down. Finally, Kaitlin Swagart scored her first goal of the game off a feed from O'Malley to give the Cavaliers their first lead at 9-8.

McFadden ended Maryland's 25-minute scoring drought as she made a move on her defender to get free and score the game-tying goal with 1:58 left. Neither team could score the game-winner in regulation and the game went into overtime.

The Cavaliers controlled the first draw control in overtime and stalled the entire three minutes. With eight seconds to go, Weymouth found Kalkstein for the game-winner. Virginia secured the draw again in the second session and held on for the 10-9 win.

The Cavaliers (14-3) were led by McCulloch who had two goals and two assists. Five other Virginia players contributed two points while Kendall McBrearty made eight saves in the cage.

Maryland (15-2) is back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to No. 6 Princeton.
