COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's soccer team lost 3-1 Friday night to West Virginia University, who advanced to the 2007 NCAA Elite Eight before losing to eventual national champion USC. Less that 16 hours after the WVU match, the Terps defeated the Terrapin Alumni by the same 3-1 margin.
Against WVU, the Terps took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the first half when Nataly Arias put a thru-ball into the path of Annesia Faulkner. Faulkner sent an early left-footed ball behind the Mountaineer defense, and Kaila Sciascia one-timed a side volley off the left post. The rebound came to Arias, who slammed the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards out. West Virginia was able to tie the score at one apiece just before halftime.
The Mountaineers then scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of the game to seal the Terps' fate. Shots on the night were 16-11 in favor of WVU.
The annual Alumni Game was held on Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The current Terps received goals from freshmen Erika Theisen and Lydia Hastings, and junior Mary Casey en route to a 3-1 victory.
The Terps concluded their successful spring season with a 3-1-3 record.
