No. 4 Women's Lacrosse Picks Up Important 18-9 Win At No. 6 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior leadership proved to be the difference as the No. 4 Maryland women's lacrosse team took down No. 6 Princeton, 18-9, on April 30 at Class of 1952 Stadium. The seniors accounted for 21 of the 23 points Maryland scored in the most lopsided decision in the series since 1984.
Dana Dobbie led the Terps with five goals and an assist while securing seven draw controls. Her 62 goals this season ranks seventh on the single-season ledger at Maryland while her 111 draw controls is the second most in a season in NCAA history. She is just three away from claiming the top spot from Georgetown's Coco Stanwick who had 113 in 2006.
Kelly Kasper scored four goals and added two assists while Lauren Cohen recorded a hat trick and also had an assist. Casey Magor chipped in with two goals and an assist while Katie Princiotto had a pair of goals.
Maryland jumped out of the gate as Dobbie won the opening draw. Kasper handled the ball behind the cage and found Dobbie on the left side for the goal for the 1-0 lead 40 seconds in to the game.
Princeton came right back though and scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 with 21:53 left in the half. Ashley Amo notched the first goal for the Tigers as she was in the right spot at the right time, picking up a loose ball in front of the goal and putting it home.
Holly McGarvie and Kristin Morrison scored 24 seconds apart around the 22:00 mark as both used nice moves through the Maryland defense to give Princeton its first lead of the game.
The Terps then scored seven unanswered goals and held Princeton scoreless the rest of the way to take an 8-3 lead at the half. The first goal of the run came from Kasper. As she brought the ball towards goal, the Tigers' defense backed off a bit and Kasper took full advantage by darting towards an open space and getting the goal at the 19:58 mark.
Dobbie won the ensuing draw and Lauren Cohen made a nice move down the middle of the field to record the equalizer with 19:39 left in the half.
The Terps then held the Princeton offense at bay for the next three minutes and Kasper forced a turnover that led to another Maryland goal. After Kasper cleared the ball into the offensive zone, Magor handled the ball behind the net and found Cohen making a run down the middle for the go-ahead score.
Dobbie then added the next two goals at 14:01 and 13:31, respectively, to push the lead to 6-3. Her first score came on a blazing long-range shot from the left side and then she made a run right through the heart of the Princeton defense and Cohen found her for the score.
Dobbie then notched the natural hat trick with her third-straight goal, and fourth of the half, as she made a move on the right side past two defenders and beat the goalie at a tough angle. Magor closed out the half as she scored with 14 seconds left. She made a nice move behind the cage and beat the defender on her to get open.
Princeton scored the first two goals of the half to cut the deficit to 8-5 in the first four minutes but that is as close as it would get. McGarvie made a nice move down the middle of the Terps' defense for an unassisted tally and then Christine Caseceli connected on a free position chance to pull the Tigers within three.
Maryland responded with a four-goal run to extend its lead to 12-5 with 21:02 left in the game. Kasper started the streak with an unassisted goal as she made a nice individual effort by faking a pass and then taking the ball to the cage herself.
Princiotto chipped in with her first goal of the game as she powered through a pair of defenders on the left side of the crease for the goal and then Kasper added another unassisted goal at the 22:48 mark to make it 11-5.
Magor added the final goal of the run with a nice move behind the cage to free herself up to give the Terps the 12-5 advantage.
Caseceil ended the Terps' run with a free position goal with 21:02 remaining in the game, but the Terps scored five more unanswered goals to take an insurmountable 17-6 lead. Sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber notched a spectacular goal as she ran around the cage towards the left side. As she wrapped around the cage, a defender pushed her to the ground, but Spinnenweber still got the shot off and past the goalie for the score.
The next Terps goal came with 17:43 to go in transition as Kasper brought the ball up the middle of the field. She made the long pass to Cohen in front of the cage and she simply turned and shot for the goal to put Maryland up 14-6.
Kasper, Princiotto, and Dobbie ended the five-goal run for the Terps while freshman Brandi Jones tallied Maryland's last goal.
The Terps (16-2) will close out their regular season at Loyola on Saturday when they take on the Greyhounds at 4:00 p.m. at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
