VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -
The Maryland competitive cheer team hit another solid routine Saturday in its performance at the Challenge at the Sea, hosted by American Cheer Express, held in Virginia Beach. The team hit both of its partner stunts flawlessly, a strong sign before heading to NCA nationals later this week.
Head coach Jarnell Bonds called it the team's best partner stunt sequence all season. "This was quite an accomplishment for us, as we had to perform without our top flyer, junior Meredith Walkiewicz, due to injury," said Bonds. "Sophomore Krystle Cornetta really stepped up to fill in for Meredith and she hit all of her stunts."
Bonds also mentioned sophomore Ashley Heiser for her improvement in her double-full twist basket toss in the routine and senior tri-captain Laura Chiriaco for her all-around effort and leadership effort over the last few weeks in getting the team prepared for nationals.
The Terps will host a send-off event Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Comcast Center Auxiliary gym. The team will perform, as well as Maryland's other two cheer teams, the small intermediate coed team and the small coed team. All are welcome to attend.
The Terrapins have won NCA nationals the last two years and are looking to repeat again as national champions. Since its induction four years ago, the Terps finished second in 2005 and then claimed the title in both 2006 and 2007.
