April 9, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland competitive cheer team will head to Daytona Beach, Fla. today to compete in the National Cheerleading Association's collegiate nationals competition. The Terps will compete Thursday in the first round, then Friday in the finals round.

Maryland is scheduled to perform at 11:36 a.m. Thursday in the All Girl I division. Their performance time for Friday depends on their placing after Thursday's performance. The awards ceremony is scheduled for early Friday evening.

The Terps will compete against college teams from South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Bowling Green State, Rutgers, Michigan State, Louisville, Kennesaw State, North Carolina State, Florida, Quinnipiac, New Hampshire, Ohio State, Massachusetts-Amherst, and Illinois.

The Terrapins are looking to defend their 2006 and 2007 national titles. In 2007, the Terps staged the biggest comeback in NCA history, after falling to sixth place in the first round because of deductions, to fight back and win the title.
