COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielders Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper have been named nominees for the Collegiate Women Sports Award sponsored by Honda. The women's lacrosse captains are the first teammates to be nominees since Maryland and Georgetown both had a pair in 2001. This is just the third time a program has been honored with two nominees.
This is Dobbie's second-straight season as a nominee for the award. Associate head coach Jen Adams won the first two Honda Sports Awards in 2000 and 2001 as a player with the Terps. Adams and teammate Quinn Carney were both nominated in 2001 along with Bowen Holder and Sheehan Stanwick from Georgetown.
Hannah Nielson from Northwestern and Katie Rowan from Syracuse are the other nominees for the award this season.
Dobbie, who is also a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, leads the country this season in draw controls with 126 which is a new NCAA single-season record and she averages 6.00 per outing. The Guelph, Ontario product leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals (70), goals per game (3.33), and draw controls. She is also second in points per game (4.00) behind Kasper. Her goals and goals per game numbers rank fifth and 15th in the country, respectively.
Dobbie accumulated 334 draw controls in her four years which is also an NCAA record. Her 70 goals this season is the sixth-most ever in a single season at Maryland. She also led the team with 32 caused turnovers and was third with 33 ground balls. She had 15 hat tricks to her name this year in 21 games and had eight games with eight or more draw controls.
Dobbie was a three-time ACC Player of the Week which led the conference and was named to the ACC Player of the Year for the second-straight season.
Kasper, who is already a two-time All-American and a Tewaaraton finalist with Dobbie, led the Terps with 87 points on 43 goals and 44 assists. Her 44 assists this year rank fifth all-time at Maryland in a single season. She was also second on the team with 52 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. Kasper had 13 games with multiple assists this season.
She leads the ACC in assists (44), assists per game (2.10), points (87), and points per game (4.14). Her assists and assists per game numbers rank fifth and 10th in the nation, respectively, while her points total ranks ninth.
Kasper ranks fifth all-time at Maryland with 102 career assists and seventh with 244 points.
Kasper was named ACC and Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week this season and was a two-time recipient of the Player of the Week award from WomensLax.com.
COLLEGIATE WOMEN SPORTS AWARD PRESENTED BY HONDA
For the 23rd consecutive year, Honda is proud to honor the most outstanding female collegiate athletes in the nation with the Collegiate Women Sports Awards.
Winners are selected in each of the 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports by a panel of more than 1,000 NCAA administrators. Three other athletes are honored as the Division II Athlete of the Year, Division III Athlete of the Year and Inspiration Award winner. Each woman is selected not only for her superior athletic skills, but also for her leadership abilities, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.
At the end of the year, one deserving athlete will be chosen as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and receive the coveted Honda-Broderick Cup. Past winners of this prestigious award include Jackie Joyner and Mia Hamm. In 2007, the honor went to volleyball star Sarah Pavan of the University of Nebraska.
Honda has donated more than $2 million in grants and scholarships to the universities over the course of the program.
