COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland competitive cheer team held its annual banquet Friday. Team awards were presented to the student-athletes for their successes throughout the past year.
Senior tri-captain Laura Chiriaco won the Terrapin Award, an award that is presented to the team member with leadership, pride, spirit and all-around success in the classroom, as well as on the mat.
"The Terrapin award is really an award that should go to the whole team, because everyone on this team constantly represents the pride we all feel for this program. So to have such a talented, intelligent, well-rounded group of people choose to recognize me is a great honor. I am really glad that I've been able to show my teammates how much I love them and this team," said Chiraco.
Freshman Lauren Fong was named Rookie of the Year for her efforts in her first year as a Terrapin. "Everything the girls saw in me for this award is really a reflection of them, I just wanted to be at their level," said Fong.
The Most Valuable Player award went to junior Ali Pascucci for stepping up whenever needed throughout the season. "It means so much to be voted the MVP considering the amount of talent there is on our team. Anyone could have won this award, and each person brings something important to the team, which is why we have won three consecutive national championships. I'm so honored that my teammates think of me as such a vital contributor and it definitely motivates me to continue to work hard for next year's season," said Pascucci after accepting the award.
Freshman Erin Cahill was named Most Improved for working hard to improve her skills over the course of the season. "I am so thankful for the most improved award. I feel I won this award through the girls on my team, because they inspire and motivate me to become a better cheerleader," said Cahill.
Freshman Arielle Brown was awarded the team sportsmanship award for her energy and love of the team throughout the season. Freshman Kaitlyn Letourneau was voted the Unsung Hero of the team for her selfless efforts throughout the year.
