CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Marissa Coleman scored 19 points and Demauria Liles added 18 points, but it was not enough to overcome No. 19/18 Virginia as the No. 8/9 Maryland women's basketball team fell to the Cavaliers, 89-81, at John Paul Jones Arena on Friday.
The loss drops the Terrapins (16-4, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) two games back of Florida State for first place in the league.
"Credit Virginia," head coach Brenda Frese said following the defeat. "They did a tremendous job in the second half. That's life on the road in the ACC. We have to let (this loss) teach us a lesson and (Virginia) taught us a lot about ourselves tonight."
The Terps came out blistering hot in the first half, hitting 58.6 percent of their shots. Liles, a junior, led the Terps with 10 points in the frame, benefiting from several tightly-threaded assists underneath the bucket. Coleman, who wound up leading the Terps with nine rebounds, posted seven in the first half.
Kristi Toliver picked up her second personal foul at the 13:18 mark of the first stanza and was relegated to the bench the remainder of the half, but sophomore reserve Anjalé Barrett made sure there was no drop off in production from the point. Barrett, who came into the game having hit 11 of her 18 three-point attempts on the season, sank her lone first-half 3-point attempt.
In total, Barrett registered six points by halftime.
The Terrapins went into the locker room with a 39-31 lead, thanks in large part to a 9-0 run after the Cavaliers had tied the score at 25-25.
Maryland extended its lead as far as 13 points in the second half, but Virginia's Monica Wright and Lyndra Littles turned up the pressure. Littles finished with a game-high 30 points, 20 of which came in the second period. Wright added 28 for the Cavaliers (17-4, 4-2), with 23 points coming after halftime.
Despite missing the majority of the first half due to foul trouble, Kristi Toliver finished with 17 points. With her first bucket of the game, Toliver became just the fifth Terp ever to record at least 1,750 points.
"We came out well in the second half but then (Virginia) got more loose balls," Toliver said. "They out-hustled us and got easy transition points. They did a great job attacking us."
Maryland will be back on the court on Monday night in Tallahassee, Fla., where it will take on the first-place Florida State Seminoles. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be aired on Sun Sports Network and on the radio on WMUC Sports.
