STARKVILLE, Miss. -
The 20th-ranked University of Maryland women's basketball team fell to the 25th-ranked Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs, 84-55, Sunday afternoon in Starkville, Miss.
The Terps (3-1) were held to 16-of-52 shooting from the floor during their first road contest of the season.
Maryland was unable to build momentum as Mississippi State's experienced lineup used a strong and balanced attack to keep the Terrapins trailing.
Senior Alexis Rack had a career day scoring 43 points for the Lady Bulldogs (4-0). Her point total is tied for third best for the Bulldogs and was just five points off LaToya Thomas' school mark of 48 points set in 2000.
During the first half, the Bulldogs shot 51.4 percent to pull ahead of Maryland.
Maryland still saw some good things from its young squad. Sophomore center Lynetta Kizer grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds and was just shy of her second season double-double with nine points. This was her second consecutive game with 10 or more boards.
Freshman forward Tianna Hawkins had a perfect performance, hitting all three shots from the field and both free-throw attempts. Hawkins also grabbed five rebounds. Freshman guard Dara Taylor earned her first start of the season and posted nine points and notched two steals. Freshman guard Jackie Nared grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, all defensive, in a career-high 22 minutes.
Maryland will return home to College Park, Md., for a five-game home stand in Comcast Center, starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday with Samford.
