The No. 69 Maryland men's tennis team played a tough match against No. 18 Wake Forest, but fell in a match that was closer than the score indicates, losing 6-1.
The Terps (7-6, 1-3) pushed the Demon Deacons (10-5, 1-0) all match, starting with a strong effort at doubles.
The team of Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt was on the brink of defeating the No. 1-ranked doubles team of Cory Parr and Steven Forman, before a string of tough rulings that swung the momentum back in Wake's direction.
Maryland's number one doubles team got off to a fast start, taking a 3-1 lead before Parr and Forman came storming back to take a 4-3 lead. The Terps got right back on the offensive, going on a run of their own to take a 7-4 lead.
But the team of Parr and Forman showed why they hold the nation's top spot at doubles, as they broke and then held serve to draw the score to 7-6. Next to serve was Orban, who was broken on a highly contested out call that dashed the Terps' confidence and sent Wake on a high that took them to the win, 9-7.
Once singles play began, Fetbroyt found the momentum lost at the end of his doubles match as he took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first set of his match against Joost Vogel. The Maryland senior didn't look back on his way to the Terps' only victory of the match, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Mathias Sarrazin got off to a good start of his own, taking a 5-3 lead on Iain Atkinson, before the Demon Deacon sophomore turned the tides and took control, winning 7-5, 6-1.
Junior David Kwon played a strong match against Cory Parr, the No. 26-ranked singles player in the latest ITA rankings. Kwon was even with Parr at 4-4 in the first set, and at 3-3 in the second, but hit a wall in both sets on his way to the loss, 6-4, 6-3.
The Terps will be back in action Sunday at 12 p.m. when they play host to No. 42 North Carolina State at the Tennis Center at College Park.
