March 6, 2009

Recap |  Box Score |  Quotes

GREENSBORO, N.C. - #1 Maryland 72, #9 Wake Forest 70

- The 2009 ACC Tournament marks the third time the Terrapins have come in as the conference's top seed. With the win today, they are now 6-0 all-time in that role, having won the 1979 and 1989 tournaments as the top seed.

- The win marks the Terrapins' eighth straight win over Wake Forest. Maryland is now 49-12 overall against the Demon Deacons, their best mark against any original ACC team.

- Lynetta Kizer finished the regular season leading all ACC freshmen with eight double-doubles. In her first career postseason game, she added another, scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 boards. Both marks were the best for any player on either team.

- Marissa Coleman's one steal on the day was her 200th theft of her career.

- Coleman has become just the second player in ACC history (along with Clemson's Barbara Kennedy) to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 400 assists, 200 steals and 100 blocks in her collegiate career.

- With 12 points, Coleman now has 2,061 in her career, passing Heather Burge of Virginia (2,058 from 1990-93) for 14th place in ACC history.

- Coleman also pulled down seven boards, giving her 1,067 career rebounds. She passed Tracy Reid of North Carolina (1,065 from 1995-98) for 12th place on the conference's all-time list.

- Kristi Toliver dished out six assists, giving her 730 in her career. In addition to improving upon her Maryland record, Toliver moved past Nikki Teasley of North Carolina (728 from 1998-2000, 02) and Dawn Staley of Virginia (729 from 1989-92) for second place on the conference's all-time list. Sharnee Zoll of Virginia (2004-08) is the ACC's all-time leader in assists with 779.

- Toliver was 3-for-7 from 3-point range, giving her 78 treys on the season. That ties her personal record, which she set last season when she went 78-for-210. Currently, Toliver is 78-for-171 this season.

- The seniors combined for 27 points, their fewest since putting up 26 in the loss at Duke on Jan. 12. However, when the Terps were finally able to take the lead on Wake Forest late in the second half, it was Toliver who hit a 3-pointer to pull them within one, and Coleman who finished a fast-break lay-up to give Maryland a 66-65 lead which they would not relinquish.

- Kim Rodgers provided a spark off the bench in the first half, playing 10 minutes and knocking down seven points. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, improving her season numbers to 12-for-21 (.571). It was her first game with multiple treys since hitting two in the win over UNC Asheville on Dec. 29.
