Success All Around for Maryland Women's Soccer at Kicks Against Breast Cancer Event

April 20, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Women's Soccer team raised nearly $2,500 as part of its participation in the 13th Annual Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament. All monies raised went to the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital, a division of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Guest speakers at this year's event included U.S. National Team member, and currrent Washington Freedom standout, Abby Wambach; as well as Washington Freedom President and General Manager, Mark Washo. A staggering one in eight females is diagnosed annually with breast cancer, a figure that left the 200 participating female athletes speechless.

On the field, the Terps were just as successful as they were in their fundraising efforts. Behind two goals from Jasmyne Spencer, and an additional tally from the foot of Lydia Hastings, the Terrapins defeated Villanova, 3-0. Soon thereafter, Maryland took on an Ohio State team that had tied Virginia 0-0 earlier in the day. With just over two minutes remaining in the match, Ashley Grove's cross to the far post found the head of Megan Watson, who buried it in the top corner. That proved to be the game winner in the 1-0 victory over the Buckeyes. Goalkeeper Mary Casey and her back line produced their third and fourth consecutive shutouts on the day.

The Terps conclude their spring season this weekend as they head to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State and Bucknell Friday night. Maryland will then travel back to College Park just in time to take on a talented Alumni squad Saturday afternoon.
