Postgame Notes
Season Openers: With the loss, Maryland fell to 71-44-2 (.620) all-time in season-opening games. The Terps are 6-3 in season-opening games under Friedgen. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak in season openers under Friedgen.
Series Mark: California evened the all-time series with Maryland at 1-all, avenging a 35-27 loss to the Terps last season.
First-time Starters: Eight Terps started for the first time in their career against Cal. Lamar Young, Andrew Gonnella, and Paul Pinegar all got their first starts on the offensive line, while Tommy Galt and Matt Furstenburg started as dual tight ends. On the defensive side, A.J. Francis and Deege Galt started on the D-line, while Demetrius Hartsfield started at linebacker.
Quick Kabongo: DL Masengo Kabongo, playing in his first career game, recorded the first sack of his career when he took down California QB Kevin Riley for a loss of eight during the third quarter. The sack was one of two on the night for the Terrapins, with Deege Galt and Adrian Moten combining to make the other.
Mr. Versatility: Torrey Smith is turning into a guy who can do it all for the Terps. The sophomore, who last season set the ACC record for kickoff return yardage in a season, made a variety of plays against Cal.
• The sophomore has explosive ability as a kick returner. Smith racked up a career-high 187 kickoff return yards against the Bears, including a long of 48 yards. He moved from third to fifth on the Maryland career kickoff return yards list (1,276 yards).
• Smith, who emerged as a reliable receiver late last season for the Terps, had one catch for 29 yards against Cal. He also had two rushes for 16 yards, and finished the evening with 232 all-purpose yards, second-most in his career (245 vs. Boston College 11/29/08).
Ferrara Delivers: Freshman kicker Nick Ferrara, who battled with Mike Barbour throughout fall camp for the starting place-kicking job, delivered against Cal. The Hicksville, N.Y., native connected on field goals of 26 and 42 yards, and hit a PAT. He also posted a specia- teams tackle.
Turner's Climb: With his performance at California, Chris Turner continued his rise up the schools all-time career passing chart. With his 167 yards passing, he moved past Dan Henning and is now sixth all-time at Maryland in career passing yards with 4,641.
Scott Moves Up Rushing List: Junior Da'Rel Scott moved from 22nd to 21st on the Maryland career rushing chart by posting 90 yards on the ground. Scott now has 1,358 career rushing yards.
Pass Break-Ups: The Terps averaged 3.8 pass break-ups per game last season, but it took them less than one half to surpass that against Cal. Led by Anthony Wiseman's four PBU's, which marked a career-high, Maryland totaled five at halftime and finished the game with six. Last season Wiseman led the Terps with 10 PBU's.
Career Days: TE Tommy Galt (three for 29 yards) and Adrian Cannon (five for 30 yards) each posted a career high in receptions. On the defensive side of the ball, FS Antwine Perez registered a career-high eight tackles, including a career-best seven solo stops.
