Postgame quotes: No. 21 Maryland 72, Towson 47

Nov. 18, 2010

Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening statement:

“I think you can see our growing pains that we are still as a team, trying to grow together. I thought that the first half we came out really flat, defensively all the credit goes to Towson with their attack mentality against us. Offensively I thought we wasted a lot of possessions. I give credit to this team, for being challenged at halftime. I thought they came out with a different energy and intensity level that I thought we were finally able to use our advantage our depth and length to be able to wear down Towson.”

On Maryland’s advantage inside:

“I thought it was going to be sooner than when it happened.  I thought we had the advantage that we stated time and time again to our team and that was our inside presence both offensively and defensively. We felt like we should be able to get to that point.”

On the fast breaks tonight:

“I thought we had a great life, having our different waves of players. We looked a lot fresher and the energy level that we were playing with, what broke it open was transition. We started to really hustle back down the floor. Dara Taylor was great for us tonight. She did a great job giving us a huge spark. That’s what we need to have because this team does like to run.”

On the mix of fast and slow pace tonight:

“We always want to run, but I think our emphasis was to get the ball inside. I don’t know if one equaled out the other in terms of the approach. Towson did a nice job getting back and their match-up zone slowed us down early.”

On motivation from last year’s loss to Towson:

“It crossed my mind a few time, we had a few friendly reminders. Any time people make history on your program you are not going to let it happen again if you are a competitor. I think that was the message that we wanted to send through. I’m pleased that our team came out in the second half, focused and knew what they had to get done.”

On the turnovers:

“I’m going to have to go back and look at the film. Dara Taylor did a great job keeping her composure, and making great decisions. Our guard play in transition did a really nice job being really solid with the basketball.”

On the chemistry of the team:

“I think at halftime we had a challenge to the team. I didn’t think we were playing to the standard that we have set. It was a firm halftime talk. The chemistry of our team like it has been since day one is tremendous and every time we get a chance to get out on the floor and as we get ready for road trips it will only grow. One of the plays our staff commented about was when we had the five at the table ready to get in Natasha Cloud as she came out tapped everybody up who was getting ready to come in. That’s just great leadership in terms of understanding how to pick teammates up and how much we support each other and our team is doing a great job of that.”

Sophomore Guard Dara Taylor

On the team’s pace of play tonight:

”We know that we are faster and we can run, that’s our game we are trying to push. I think to really give us the edge over Towson we just wore them down and ran the floor hard.”

Sophomore Forward Diandra Tchatchouang

 On her rebounding tonight:

“I have been working on my rebounding. Every time I feel like I can crash the glass. That’s what we all try to do against every team is just get rebounds.”
