The 23rd-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (5-1) rolled past Massachusetts (0-5) 82-50 Saturday afternoon in its final game in the Eighth Annual East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament. The Terrapins dominated the paint, outscoring the Minutewomen inside 48-8.
Freshman Alyssa Thomas led all scorers with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. She grabbed seven rebounds, dished three assists and nabbed two steals. Sophomore Tianna Hawkins scored 14, as she was 7-for-8 from the field.
Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang and junior Lynetta Kizer each scored 11.
The Terrapins led 11-9 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. 20 seconds later, Kizer made a layup and was fouled on the play. She made the free throw and jumpstarted the Terrapin offense on a 13-2 run over the next seven minutes. They led 39-19 at the half.
The Terps won the battle on the boards, 47-25. They have won the rebounding advantage in all six games so far this season. They grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to score 22 second chance points. Freshman Laurin Mincy led with eight boards in the game.
As a team, the Terps dished 21 assists. Sophomore Dara Taylor led with five, while Mincy had four.
Maryland will head to West Lafayette, Ind. next week to take on Purdue Thursday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terps and the Boilermakers will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
