Head Coach Brenda Freese
Opening statement:
“I thought we came out with a great sense of energy today. It was really indicative of how we came back after the break. I thought the first ten minutes of the first half we were really good changing up a lot of things defensively and using our length and using our speed. Overall I thought we played a really solid, complete game and it was great to be able to see the unselfishness we played with as a team. I thought we really shared the basketball today and made things difficult.”
On the team hitting it’s stride:
“I really actually felt that the week of finals and leading into Delaware State I really saw some things coming together and it is fun to really see this team starting to kind of gel and click. Obviously this is the time that you want to be coming together as you’re getting ready for what’s out ahead with ACC play.”
On positive things to take from the game:
“Obviously our rebounding has always been there, but just the assist to turnover ratio – we’re having a better feel for each other on the court. And then defensively, being able to click in terms of the things that we’re trying to run.”
On the team’s rebounding success:
“I think a couple things [have led to success]. Our length- when you look at the size that we have and then having a level of toughness and a willingness to go get the basketball. I just think that this team loves to compete and is really, really aggressive on the glass and to be number one in the country obviously on the boards is something that we are really proud of and is something that we want to be able to continue with.”
On things to work on:
“A big area for us is free-throw shooting. That’s an area that when you’re talking about going on the road and when games are going to tighten up, we’ve got to do a much better job. We recognize that, our players are working hard in that area. I thought as well as we came out in that first ten minutes, we had a little dip in intensity in the second ten minutes of the first half, so sustaining the level of intensity that we’ve got to be able to play a 40 minute game as we’re getting ready to play tougher competition.”
Junior Center Lynetta Kizer
On the team’s rebounding success:
“That’s just something that we want to focus on. We know our length is going to give a lot of people problems pretty much and that’s something we’ve kind of taken pride in ourselves being number one in the nation in rebounding. That’s something that we want to keep getting after. I think it’s something we’ve kind of focused on in preseason. Pretty much just finding an opponent and hitting them and keeping them on your back and just getting after it and being tough. I think we’re excelling at that right now.”
Sophomore forward Diandra Tchatchouang
On the forward’s success:
“I think in practice we just try to play together and make each other better, so it helps us a lot and it shows in the game.”
Junior Center Yemi Oyefuwa
On playing a good amount of minutes:
“I t definitely helps, you need to always be ready when you’re number is called and that’s one thing I’m sure our team prides ourselves on. Whenever our number is called, you have to be ready to go. So it was nice to get a nice amount of minutes to see what type of shape I’m in and what type of shape I need to be in, especially since we’re a running team.”
