COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -
The No. 18/20 Maryland women's basketball team topped No. 17/17 St. John's 66-60 to win the annual Terrapin Classic.
Diandra Tchatchouang led with 19 points, 15 in the first half, while Lynetta Kizer broke the 1000-point mark.
The Terrapins opened the game strong defensively. The Red Storm did not notch a field goal until ten minutes into the game. Maryland held St. John's leading scorer Shenneika Smith to 3-for-14 shooting from the field.
Kizer scored 13 points to go over 1,000 in her career for the Terrapins (12-1), who never trailed in their 11th straight victory.
Eugeneia McPherson scored 25 and Da'Shena Stevens added 15 for St. John's (12-2), which was playing a ranked team for the first time this year. Maryland also ended the Red Storm's 11-game winning streak.
St. John's became the first team to outrebound Maryland this season, 37-35.
The Red Storm made just two of their first 16 field goal attempts but never trailed by any more than seven in the first half. Consecutive 3-pointers by McPherson and Amanda Burakoski tied the game at 20 with 4:31 left.
A pair of free throws by Natasha Cloud gave Maryland a 31-26 lead at the break.
A 3-pointer by Kim Rodgers gave Maryland a 44-34 lead with 13:03 remaining in the game. The Terrapins then methodically pulled away and a 3-pointer by Anjale Barrett increased the lead to 56-40. A 3-pointer by Shenneika Smith pulled the Red Storm within seven with 2:07 left, but they could not close the margin.
Tchatchouang was named the Terrapin Classic MVP, while Kizer and St. John's Stevens were named to the All-Tournament team.
It was only the second meeting between the schools. Maryland also won the previous match-up, 81-74, in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
The Terrapins will hit the road later this week to play at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia Sunday at 2 p.m. They will open Atlantic Coast Conference play Jan. 6 at No. 3/3 Duke at 7 p.m.
