Terps Move Up Rankings, Face UVa Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's tennis team continues its march up the national rankings.
The Terrapins improved to No. 62 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings which were released Tuesday. They jumped 11 spots to earn their highest ranking since the end of the 2008 season (No. 61).
Maryland (13-2, 1-0) is off to its best start since the 1986 season when the Terps started 14-1.
The Terps, who have shut out their last five foes, are gearing up for a return to Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend.
Maryland, which downed Boston College, 4-3, on Feb. 19, will put its nine-match winning streak on the line Friday when it plays host to top-ranked Virginia.
The Cavaliers (17-1, 2-0) boast a powerful lineup which features five players in the top 75 of the ITA singles rankings.
The Terps counter with a young, talented roster which features five freshmen and has been dominating opponents this spring.
Tommy Laine and Jesse Kiuru, freshmen from Finland, have led the Terps attack. Laine is No. 124 on the ITA singles rankings.
The Terps-Cavaliers match gets underway at 2:30 p.m. from the Tennis Center at College Park. Admission is free to the event.
Maryland will play at No. 22 Virginia Tech on Sunday. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. from the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center
The Hokies improved to 7-3 with a 5-2 win over Nebraska Wednesday afternoon. Virginia Tech is 1-1 in the ACC.
