COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Senior Lori Bjork posted a game-high 20 points to lead her team to their second consecutive 35-point victory. The Terrapins defeated East Carolina 87-52, to advance to the Women's National Invitational Tournament Third Round. The Terps are now 6-0 this season against opponents they have met for the first time this season.
Maryland will face the winner of Old Dominion and Providence which takes place on Monday at 7 p.m. ET. The Terps find out day, time and location of their next game this week. Ticket information will be made available as soon as the game day and time is confirmed.
Maryland has now scored at least 80 points in three of their last four games. Every Terrapin made an appearance on the floor today and contributed at least one point to the win. All but one player pulled down at least one rebound to help the Terps outmuscle the Lady Pirates under the basket, 55-35.
The Terrapins showed their prowess early with a dominant first half scoring 53 points, a season-high for points scored in any half this year for the Terps. Three players contributed double figures in the first half including a career-high 17 points from sophomore Kim Rodgers. Bjork posted 15 while sophomore Lynetta Kizer added 10. Maryland also scored 11 points off of ECU's 10 first half turnovers.
In just the first minute of the game the Terrapins' defense forced turnovers on both of ECU's first two possessions. Maryland capitalized on the miscues by the Lady Pirate's to help them go up 4-0. The Terps offense was also sparked early after two free throws from Kizer. The Woodbridge, Va., native has made 13 consecutive free throws dating back to Feb. 28.
East Carolina made their debut on the board with a bucket by Kim Gay. Gay led her squad through the first 20 minutes of play as the only Lady Pirate to register double-digit points in the first half. She finished with a team-high 15 points.
Maryland started to surge offensively after Rodgers hit back-to-back three-pointers. Rodgers repeated her performance from Friday night in which she posted a career high-tying five treys against Iona College in the first round of the WNIT.
The second half was kicked off by a three-pointer from senior Lori Bjork, giving the Johnston, Iowa, guard 20 points in the game. It was her third 20-plus point performance of the season and 21st in double-figure points.
Freshman Jackie Nared surged in the second half scoring all nine of her points in the final 20 minutes. She charted one three-pointer, two rebounds, dished out two assists and nabbed one steal.
Freshman Tianna Hawkins earned a career-high five blocks behind her 10 rebounds. It was her 13th time pulling down double-figure rebounds. Rodgers finished the game with three assists, another career-best for the Virginia Beach, Va., native. Freshman Dara Taylor also nabbed a career-high of her own with eight rebounds.
