COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland football team kicks off spring practice on Tuesday when the Terps hit the field for the first of 15 workouts over the course of the next five weeks.
The Terps are scheduled to practice three times per week (each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), concluding spring ball with the annual Red-White Game on Saturday, April 24. The spring game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The game is the culmination of Maryland Day, a university-sponsored family celebration.
Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen will kick off the spring with a news conference at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Click here to view the news conference live.
The Terps had just 14 seniors on last season's team, the fewest number in Friedgen's tenure, and played 24 freshmen, but those youngsters now have a year of playing under their belt.
Maryland will have 54 letterwinners, including 12 starters and eight players who have earned either all-conference or All-America honors, on the 2010 roster.
Junior wide receiver Torrey Smith and senior running back Da'Rel Scott are two playmakers on an offense which returns seven starters.
Smith was a 2009 second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference as both a receiver and specialist after posting team highs in receptions (61) and yards (824), and breaking his own ACC kickoff return yards record (1,309).
Scott missed five games with a broken wrist last season, but rushed for 1,133 yards in 2008 en route to first team all-league honors.
A two-time All-ACC performer, senior linebacker Alex Wujciak headlines a defense which returns eight of its top 10 tacklers from last season.
Wujciak tallied 131 tackles in 2009, ranking eighth nationally in that category (10.9 per game).
Fellow linebacker Adrian Moten, one of four team captains as a junior last season, has been a playmaker throughout his career. Moten led the team in tackles for loss (9.0) and sacks (6.0) last season.
The Terps lost three starters along the defensive line, but tackle A.J. Francis earned freshman All-America honors last season and seven of the 11 linemen who saw action in 2009 were first-year performers.
