COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland men's tennis team fought back from an early deficit, but couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling Sunday afternoon to No. 24 Duke, 5-2.
The Terps (13-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) found themselves in a hole early, falling behind 3-0 after losing the doubles point and the first two singles matches to the Blue Devils (9-5, 2-0 ACC).
The last four singles matches, however, all came down to the third set, and each was hotly contested.
At No. 4 singles, Sergio Wyss picked up the first point on the day for the Terps, outlasting Duke's David Holland for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
Unfortunately, Maryland's chances for an upset would be short-lived. At No. 5 singles, Duke's Jared Pinsky defeated Maryland's Mathias Sarrazin 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Blue Devils.
Tommy Laine, ranked 124th nationally for singles, notched Maryland's other win on the afternoon, defeating 118th-ranked Reid Carleton 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. The victory was Laine's first over a ranked opponent this season.
Even in defeat, Maryland head coach Kyle Spencer praised his team's effort against a tough opponent.
"I thought we did a good job of competing," Spencer said. "For our young team to come out today with the same passion and energy that they had on Friday was fantastic, and I'm really proud of them."
The Terps will be back in action next weekend for a pair of ACC road matches. Maryland will first visit No. 29 Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Friday at 2:30 p.m., and will then take on No. 33 Clemson next Sunday at 11 a.m. in Clemson, S.C.
