GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Sophomore Lynetta Kizer recorded her 18th double-double behind a 22-point performance and 10 rebounds to lead her team to a first round victory over No. 8 seeded North Carolina.
Maryland's first round win over UNC knocked the Tar Heels out of the tournament and will keep them from advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time ever.
The Terrapins will now have a rematch of last season's championship game with No. 1 seed Duke, Friday, March 5 at 3 p.m. ET. The two teams have met twice already this season. The game will be televised on RSN (RSN - Fox Sports Net South (FSNS), Comcast Sports Net (CSN), Fox Sports Net Florida (FSNFL), New England Sports Network (NESN)) and Fox HD.
The Terrapins took an early 10-2 lead in the first minutes of play sparked by back-to-back baskets from Kizer. Senior Lori Bjork followed with a three-pointer. North Carolina's Trinity Bursey turned the ball over and the Terrapins capitalized on the Tar Heel miscue with a three-pointer from Kizer. UNC was held to under 10 points for the first eight minutes of play.
Maryland built up a 16-point lead with 12:19 remaining in the first half.
The Terrapins maintained their double-figure lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half.
North Carolina rallied with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to five but the Terps answered with an 8-1 streak of their own to go ahead by 12. Maryland ended the half with a solid 10-point lead.
An early second half jumper by sophomore Kim Rodgers pushed the lead to 12. Two free-throws by Kizer and a jumper from freshman Dara Taylor gave Maryland their largest lead of the afternoon of 16 points.
With four minutes ticking away on the clock, Kizer helped the Terrapins score seven points in under a minute with two layups of her own and a three-pointer from freshman Jackie Nared. The next 10 Maryland points came from free throws.
Twelve seconds sat on the clock after a layup from Cetera DeGraffenreid pulled the game within two. DeGraffenreid committed her fifth foul of the night after reaching in on Rodgers. The Virginia Beach, Va., native sank both her free throws to make it a two possession game.
As North Carolina tried to pass the ball back in, Nared snatched the ball for her second steal of the day, passed down the court to Hawkins who capped the game with a layup as the last second ticked off the clock.
Hawkins finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth career double-double. She went 4-for-6 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Two other Terrapins joined Hawkins and Kizer in scoring double-figures. Taylor put up 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists. Bjork also recorded 10 points, hitting two three-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Maryland hit all six free throws in the first half and outrebounded the Tar Heels, 49-48. The Terps also outscored UNC inside the paint, 36-34, in points off turnovers, 12-11, and fast break points, 12-8. Maryland scored 41 points in the first half and are 9-0 this year when they scored more than 40 points in the first half.
