COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The season opener is roughly five months away, but it felt like the middle of football season Friday night when the Terps held their first spring scrimmage under cold and blustery conditions at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

The ground attack heated up in the cold weather as Da'Rel Scott and Davin Meggett each ran for a touchdown, and backups Caleb Porzel (9 rushes for 71 yards) and D.J. Adams (10 rushes for 70 yards) were able to get free for yardage.

"D.J. Adams had a very good scrimmage," head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "He had a few good runs. Da'Rel [Scott] broke a long one (42-yard touchdown run). D.J. was playing with the first and second team."

Adams had runs of 15, 12 and 12 yards and Porzel ripped off a 33-yarder on his first carry of the scrimmage which featured possessions starting at the offense's 5- and 25-yard lines, as well as the 50.

"We're starting to get some guys rushing for 7 yards each carry," Friedgen said. "I thought that was a positive. Yesterday, we didn't do very well but they came out today and picked up on a lot of mistakes they made."

All five quarterbacks saw time, but the top two took the majority of the snaps.

Jamarr Robinson was 15-for-25 for 148 yards and directed two of the three touchdown drives. Danny O'Brien completed 12 of 19 passes for 115 yards with one touchdown.

O'Brien also had a TD pass on one of the three goal-line possessions which occurred at the end of the scrimmage.

Kevin Dorsey led all receivers with five catches (for 36 yards). Torrey Smith, Adrian Cannon and Matt Furstenburg had four apiece.

Smith had three catches, including two on third down, on the first touchdown drive, which was capped off by Meggett's 4-yard run.

"Cannon and Dorsey made some guys miss," Friedgen said. "I thought our yards after catch was better today. On the other hand, we missed some tackles we shouldn't. There's a good and a bad on every play for me. "

The defense did not force any turnovers, but was active with four sacks and seven pass breakups.

Ben Pooler and Adrian Moten each had a scrimmage-best seven tackles. Cameron Chism had five tackles and two pass breakups.

Dexter McDougle and Trenton Hughes, who are battling for the cornerback spot opposite Chism, had six and five tackles, respectively.

"I saw a lot of good things on both sides of the ball," Friedgen said. "Both sides competed. I thought we made more plays on offense than we did (in Saturday's mini-scrimmage)."

However, there are still some things to work on during the final two weeks of spring practice.

"The negative was we had way too many penalties," Friedgen said. "The other disappointing thing is that our special teams was not very good at all."

Nick Ferrara had three field-goal attempts blocked and Ronnie Tyler fumbled on a punt return.

The Terps did not practice the kickoff game in the two-hour session, but will do so in the second scrimmage which is scheduled for Saturday, April 17.

Maryland will hold its annual Red-White Spring Game on Saturday, April 24 (3:30 p.m. kickoff in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium).
