In its final home contest of the 2010 season, the Maryland men's tennis team fell to No. 25 Florida State, 6-1, on Sunday.
The Terps (13-10, 1-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) finish the home portion of their schedule with an 11-5 record at the Tennis Center at College Park. All five of the team's setbacks came against ranked opponents, with four coming against teams ranked in the top 25.
Florida State improved to 13-6 on the year with the win, including a 6-3 mark in ACC play.
At No. 4 singles, Maryland's Jesse Kiuru got out to an early lead in his match with Andres Bucaro, taking the first set. After dropping the second set, Kiuru rallied to take the third set convincingly, winning the match 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
The Terps came out firing in doubles play, playing the Seminoles even early in each match. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of Kiuru and John Collins pulled away from Bucaro and Anderson Reed to win their doubles match, 8-6, and give Maryland the early advantage.
Florida State would pull away in the other two doubles matches, however, clinching the doubles point for its first point of the day.
The Seminoles' Clint Bowles, ranked 63rd nationally, clinched the overall win for Florida State, defeating Sergio Wyss 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Head coach Kyle Spencer credited his team for coming out and playing tough against Maryland's eighth straight ranked opponent.
"They really believe what we're doing here, that nobody's going to outwork us," Spencer said. "You really need guys who are going to fight for each other and go out and keep that mantra going.
"These guys are fighting to the bitter end, and that's the foundation of a great program. That's what we're trying to build here."
The Terps will wrap up the regular season next weekend on Tobacco Road, visiting No. 47 N.C. State and No. 18 Wake Forest. Friday's match against N.C. State will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C., and next Sunday's match against the Demon Deacons will start at noon in Winston-Salem, N.C.
