WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Maryland men's tennis team came up short in its regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 23 Wake Forest, 6-1.
Maryland (13-12, 1-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) started out with an early lead in the match, taking the doubles point from the Demon Deacons (13-8, 7-4 ACC).
The Terps got their first win of the day at No. 2 doubles. The pair of Tommy Laine and Sergio Wyss took down Wake's Steven Forman and Jason Morgenstern in an 8-5 victory, putting Maryland ahead to start the match.
The win was Wyss and Laine's second doubles victory in as many tries, leaving the pair perfect on the weekend.
Maryland's Jesse Kiuru and John Collins then clinched the doubles point, picking up an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Carlos Salmon and Tripper Carleton.
However, the Terps' momentum would not carry into singles play, as the Demon Deacons swept all six singles on the day.
At No. 3 singles, Laine forced a deciding third set against Wake's Iain Atkinson, ranked 106th in the nation. Unfortunately, Atkinson would pull away, winning the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and clinching the overall victory for the Demon Deacons.
Maryland now turns its attention to the 2010 ACC Tennis Championships, beginning Thursday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The Terps will enter the tournament as the 11 seed, and will face an opponent to be determined at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
