The No. 71 Maryland men's tennis team came up short in the first match of its weekend road trip, falling to No. 25 Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon, 7-0.
The loss drops Maryland to 13-7 on the year, and 1-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. All five of the team's ACC losses have come to teams ranked in the top 25 nationally.
The Terps fell behind early, losing the doubles point and quickly dropping the first two singles matches, and never recovered against Georgia Tech (14-3, 5-1 ACC).
The closest match of the day was played at No. 3 singles. The Terps' John Collins twice sent his match against the Yellow Jackets' Eliot Potvin into a set tiebreak, but Potvin emerged victorious each time, winning 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6).
At No. 5 singles, Georgia Tech's Magin Ortiga defeated Maryland's Ryan Lissner 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Yellow Jackets.
The Terrapins will look to rebound on Sunday morning, when the team wraps up its road weekend against No. 43 Clemson. The match will begin at 11 a.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.
