COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland (13-12, 1-10) heads to the 2010 ACC Championships on Thursday where the Terrapins will face Wake Forest (13-8, 7-4) in opening-round action. The 11th-seeded Terps and sixth-seeded Demon Deacons will play at 3 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The winner of that match will play No. 3 seed North Carolina (17-5, 7-3) at 3 p.m. Friday in quarterfinal action. Wake Forest, which is No. 23 in the ITA national rankings, downed Maryland, 6-1, on Sunday in College Park.

The Terps and Demon Deacons have not faced each other in the ACC Championships since 2006. Wake Forest upended Maryland, 4-0, in opening-round action that year.

    • The Terps, who were as high as No. 62 in the ITA rankings this season, feature one of the youngest rosters in the nation. Five of the team's eight players are freshmen, and there are no seniors.

    • Two of Maryland's standout performers have been a pair of Finnish freshmen, Jesse Kiuru and Tommy Laine. Both players joined the team in January. Laine ended the regular season with a 16-9 record in singles play. He started the season on a tear, winning his first 15 singles matches, all in straight sets. Kiuru finished the year with a 15-9 overall singles record. The duo have also been teamed in doubles quite a bit this season. Each has a 14-9 record in dual doubles matches.

    • Another Maryland freshman, Sergio Wyss, has had a strong first year. Wyss went 18-16 overall in singles, including a 14-11 mark in dual matches and 4-7 in ACC outings. Wyss earned six wins playing in the No. 1 singles slot, the most of any Terrapin on the year. His 18 singles wins are second on the team to John Collins (22-12) and his 18 doubles victories lead the team. Wyss also has been a part of four doubles wins in conference play which is tops on the team.

    • Head coach Kyle Spencer is in his first season at Maryland. The 2009 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year spent the last three seasons with Baylor, a perennial top 10 program. Spencer's first season with the Terps has been one for the record books. The team started the 2010 dual season 13-2, the program's best start since 1986. Spencer has a wide array of experience, coaching at the professional level and playing in the Olympics.
