No. 71 Maryland Stopped by Tigers

CLEMSON, S.C. - After getting out to an early lead, the No. 71 Maryland men's tennis team was unable to hold on, falling to No. 43 Clemson on Sunday, 6-1, in the final match of its weekend road trip.
The Terrapins (13-8, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened the match on a high note, taking two out of three doubles matches over the Tigers (17-7, 3-4 ACC) to win their first doubles point in conference play this season.
Maryland's first victory came at No. 2 doubles, where Tommy Laine and Sergio Wyss picked up an 8-4 win over Clemson's Moritz Dettinger and Zachary Rigsby.
Later, in the deciding doubles match, the Terps' Jesse Kiuru and John Collins outlasted Kevin Galloway and Robert Pietrucha to give Maryland the early lead over the Tigers
However, the team's momentum wouldn't carry over into singles play, as Clemson swept all six singles matches to end the day.
At No. 1 singles, Laine rallied after dropping the first set of his match against the Tigers' Derek DiFazio to force a deciding third set. Laine couldn't complete the comeback, however, falling to DiFazio by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 margin, clinching the overall victory for Clemson.
The Terrapins will return to College Park next weekend for their final home matches of the 2010 season. Maryland will play host to No. 51 Miami on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and No. 22 Florida State next Sunday at noon. Both matches will be held at the Tennis Center at College Park, and admission is free to both matches.
