The Maryland men's tennis team came up short in the opening match of its final home weekend, falling to No. 50 Miami, 6-1.
The Terps (13-9, 1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) were unable to overcome Miami's hot start. The Hurricanes (8-10, 2-6 ACC) swept the doubles point and won the first five singles matches of the day to put the match out of reach.
Maryland picked up its only point on the day at No. 4 singles. Sergio Wyss dropped his first set to Miami's David Simon, but Wyss recovered to even the match at one set apiece.
Wyss then outplayed Simon in the tiebreaker to seal the win, emerging with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory.
Maryland's John Collins also sent his match, played at No. 2 singles, to a deciding third set. Unfortunately, Collins couldn't hold on against the Hurricanes' Carl Sundberg, ranked 110th nationally, and fell by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 margin.
Miami's Ignacio Tabaoda clinched the match for the Hurricanes at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Maryland's Graham Knowlton.
Maryland will play its final home match of the 2010 season on Sunday, when the Terps welcome No. 25 Florida State to College Park. The match will begin at noon from the Tennis Center at College Park. Admission is free.
