COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
Former University of Maryland women's soccer player Mary Casey will continue her soccer career with the Washington Freedom of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) after recently signing a contract with the club.
"Mary has had to grow up fast over the last four months," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "Unfortunately she has tasted some of the uncertainty that comes with professional life. We are elated that she is getting her chance this summer in the WPS ... anyone who knows Mary appreciates how deserving she is of this opportunity. She is clearly one of the top competitors to come of college soccer this past fall."
Casey was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2010 WPS Draft by the Los Angeles Sol, but that club folded prior to the season, leaving Casey to look for another club. Her journey from Maryland to the professional ranks was captured recently by Chris Eckard of The Diamondback in his article: Finding a new home.
Casey closed out her stellar career as a Terp by helping lead Maryland to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and a 14-6-2 overall record. As a senior in 2009, Casey anchored a Terrapin defense that posted nine shutouts and held opponents to less than one goal per game. A 2008 first team All-ACC selection, Casey finished her career with a school-record 1.03 career goals against average. She also ranks fourth all-time with 13 career shutouts and is seventh on the school's all-time list with 136 saves.
