Maryland Drops Nailbiter at Duke, 71-64

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The No. 14/15 Maryland women's basketball team fell at No. 3/3 Duke 71-64 Thursday night in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Terps (13-2, 0-1 ACC) held the lead through much of the game behind junior Kim Rodgers' career high 18 points, but the Blue Devils (15-0, 1-0 ACC) surged in the last two minutes for the win.

Rodgers hit three three's for her 18 points, while freshman Alyssa Thomas notched her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards.

The Terrapins held as much as a 10-point lead in the first half. Ahead by one with 13 minutes remaining in the half, Rodgers hit back to back three's to spark the Terps to take a 25-15 lead. It was the only double-digit lead for either team.

Duke got back in the game with a Krystal Thomas-led 12-2 run that tied it at 27, but junior Lynetta Kizer's hook shot at the buzzer gave Maryland a 33-29 at the break--the Blue Devils' largest halftime deficit of the season. Duke took its first lead of the second half when Jasmine Thomas made a layup for a 39-38 lead with 16:37 remaining. The score was tied seven times in the second half.

With 2:41 remaining in the game, the Terps held a 60-58 lead. Jasmine Thomas hit a three to give Duke back the lead. The Blue Devils outscored Maryland 11-4 in the final two minutes for the win.

Tricia Liston added 12 points for Duke, while Karima Christmas and Haley Peters each scored nine. Krystal Thomas grabbed 10 rebounds.

Maryland's bench combined for 24 points, and the Terps combined for 18 assists. Junior Anjale Barrett dished a career-high 10 assists and grabbed four steals. Freshman Alicia DeVaughn had three blocks.

The Terrapins will play host to Boston College next Thursday at Comcast Center. The Terps and the Eagles will tip off at 7 p.m. The game will be shown on TerpsTV Premium and will be broadcast on WMUCSports.com.
