COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 56-45 loss vs. No. 8 Clemson.
Kicking Off: Clemson improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference ... Maryland fell to 2-4 and 1-2 in the ACC ... the Terps had won their last two games against Associated Press top-10 teams (No. 10 Rutgers, 9/29/07; No. 8 Boston College, 11/10/07).
Brown Gets First Start: Danny O'Brien had started the last 15 games at quarterback before C.J. Brown got the nod tonight. He turned in the most rushing yards by a QB in a game in school history:

Piling Up the Yards: Maryland rushed for a season-high 291 yards, led by C.J. Brown's 162. Davin Meggett added 69 and Justus Pickett had 31. It was the most rushing yards by the Terps since running for 297 in the Military Bowl last year.
Freshmen Starters: Maryland started five freshmen on defense against Clemson: defensive end Keith Bowers, Star linebacker Mario Rowson, Mike linebacker Lorne Goree, Will linebacker Alex Twine and safety Titus Till. That was the most freshmen to start for Maryland since Nov. 20, 1993, when five started in a 33-32 win over Wake Forest. That season the Terps had as many as six freshmen start in a game (on five occasions). In the game vs. the Demon Deacons, freshmen Sharrod Mack (DT), Johnnie Hicks (NG), Ratcliff Thomas (ILB), Andreal Johnson (RC) and Lamont Gore (SS) started on defense.
Sudden Change: After going 41 games without scoring via a fumble or interception (since Erin Henderson in 2006 vs. Virginia), Maryland has registered nine defensive touchdowns in the last 22 contests, including three this season. Joe Vellano had a 30-yard fumble return for a TD vs. Miami (9/5) and Cameron Chism had a 54-yard interception return that evening. Chism added a 46-yard interception return for a TD vs. Clemson.
Chism Doubles Up: Cameron Chism has two interception returns for touchdowns this season. The senior had a 46-yard return for a score this evening and posted a 54-yard pick for a TD in the season opener vs. Miami. Chism is just the third player in school history to post two interception returns for a TD in the same season. Curome Cox (2002) and Bob Haley (1966) also had two in one season.
Quick Start: Maryland scored 28 points in the opening two quarters, which is the most in the first half of an ACC game in nearly eight years. The Terps posted 45 in the opening half of a 59-21 win over North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2003.
Making Adjustments: The Terps have trotted out a different defensive starting lineup every game this season. With Alex Twine starting in place of Demetrius Hartsfield tonight, the Terps used a sixth different lineup.
Meggett Making a Move: Senior Davin Meggett moved up on two career charts this evening. With 69 yards on the ground, Meggett moved from 12th to 11th on the Maryland career rushing list (1,997). He passed Josh Allen (2002-03, 2005-06) who had 1,958 in his career. Meggett also had one touchdown on the ground and moved into a tie for 14th on the Terrapin career rushing TD list (17).
Tidbits: The 101 combined points are the most in an ACC game this year (previously Georgia Tech 45, Virginia 35) ... it was also the most points in the history of the Maryland-Clemson series (previously 79 in 1983) ... tight end Matt Furstenburg had a career-high 104 yards and two touchdowns ... it was the most receiving yards by a Maryland tight end since Vernon Davis had eight catches for 108 yards against NC State on 11/26/05 ... defensive tackle Joe Vellano had double-digit tackles for the second straight game with 11 ... he's averaging 13.3 tackles over the last three games ... Lorne Goree had a game- and career-high 12 tackles.
