Postgame Quotes: #10 Maryland 84, Loyola 46
Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement
"I thought, obviously overall, we are very pleased with the first game. It obviously took us a while in the first half to kind of get in a rhythm and get in sync. Obviously, again, it's a very good Loyola team. They're hard to guard, obviously, with a lot of four out, five out, guards, flare action with what they're doing, but I thought we settled down in the second half. Our intensity was there. It started with our defense, which led to our offense, and I thought we were able to see a lot of great things, specifically in the second half, with this team."
On forward Alyssa Thomas' play:
"Alyssa set the tone from the tip. That's what you expect: your leader, your best player, to come out, and the consistency that she's been playing with. I thought we absolutely rode Alyssa the first half until everyone could get settled down, and she was obviously key for us in the first half."
On the guards' play:
"I thought, obviously it's fun to have a scoring point guard, and the passion that Brene [Moseley] plays with and understanding on how to read the defense and how to set us up. Laurin [Mincy] settled in, our guards were able to make some key contributions, specifically in the second half. I thought we shot a little bit too much from the perimeter in the first half; we needed to go a little bit inside out. But I think, again, first game, everybody was kind of anxious to get going."
On preparing for Georgetown:
"I think first and foremost, it was nice to be able to see us getting on the glass. That's been our forte, so I thought we were extremely aggressive. I thought the presses Loyola simulated, and they ran a lot of different looks at us. I thought we did some nice things in terms of our press break, to be able to be in an attack mentality that will prepare us for Sunday."
On the offense:
"There's definitely room for improvement. I'd like to be able to see even more balanced scoring across the board, in terms of our team and the depth that we have. Obviously I think our assist-to-turnover ratio can improve, in terms of being able to get some easier looks from one another."
On Brene Moseley
"Brene coming off an ACL, missed her senior season, to be able to come in and have this kind of performance tonight speaks volumes in terms of just how she has prepared herself to come back for this moment."
Sophomore forward Alyssa Thomas
On her first half:
"I wanted to bring energy to jumpstart our offense and our defense and just get us going out there."
On playing Georgetown:
"We're going to go over and scout tomorrow. We're pretty excited."
On Loyola's physical play:
"I think we responded pretty well. Just going inside on them, and forcing them to foul us and then converting at the free throw line."
Freshman guard Brene Moseley
On her first game:
"I was excited. It was my first time getting back on the court. It was fun. The energy this team brings makes it that much easier to get up and down the court"
