Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I thought tonight was a nice, solid overall win. I thought it was extremely balanced from our end. I thought Saint Joseph's did a great job coming at us especially when we got the chance to get the lead. They had a lot of fight to them. It's good for us to be challenged like that throughout an entire game. Obviously, I loved the dominance of the glass we were able to display tonight. Being able to get the ball inside and making things difficult for them and being able to convert what we did on the free throw line. I like how we can build upon this game."
On Lynetta Kizer posting 25 points:
"Obviously, the first half we faced a lot of adversity with the foul trouble and Anjale Barrett going down. With what we see from Lynetta, I like what I see. She is really vocal, had a lot of energy with us tonight which you have to have to be successful."
On being challenged by St. Joseph's:
"I believe that it is very important to use your non-conference slate to prepare yourself for conference play. We know what that slate looks like, opening on the road three out of four games. I like that St. Joseph's never quit tonight. In my opinion, we still have to be able to sustain a tough forty minute game. That's what we are building towards and staying hungry for. There will always be areas that we can improve upon in order to reach our long-term goal.
Sophomore Alyssa Thomas
On dominating inside:
"We just attacked and transitioned. Our shots were following through to the glass because they weren't really boxing us out. They were just easy opportunities for us."
Senior Lynetta Kizer
On her career-high 25 points:
"I think there is still room for improvement. I still need to play hard for my team. But it definitely feels good to be back and be able to contribute anyway I can. Of course, the girls worked so hard for the first couple games, I'm just glad I can help out too. It definitely feels better to be back though."
Saint Joseph's Head Coach Cindy Griffin
Opening Statement:
"I wasn't surprised about how well Maryland played tonight. After watching all of the film, I was definitely concerned about Kizer coming back. I was proud of how our team competed, and one of our goals was to limit our turnovers. Having only four gave us an opportunity to get more shots off compared to Maryland, and I was happy with that. The physicality and rebounding was something that we just could not match tonight."
On great effort showed tonight by your team:
"Our team is really in the process of developing, and determining who we are going to be this year. Tonight's game was a good indication of our team not giving up, we didn't hang our heads. We kept fighting back, and that is the character of our kids and the motto of our school.
On encouragement for what lies ahead this season:
"I told the kids before this game what I wanted to get out of it. I focused on a couple things including limiting our turnovers and taking a step in the right direction in terms of competing. I thought tonight we came to play, and we didn't back down against a group of very talented and well-coaches players. I think this game can certainly only help us moving forward."
