RICHMOND, Va. -
Karri Ellen Johnson had a career-high seven goals and Sarah Mollison tied a school-record with six assists to lead No. 1 Maryland past Richmond, 18-7, Sunday.
Johnson, who extended her streak to 46 consecutive games with a goal, landed on Maryland's career goals list, ranking eighth in program history with 150. Mollison's six helpers tied a Terrapin single-game record and vaulted the senior to ninth in career assists (81) at Maryland.
The reigning national champions kicked off the season with an offensive onslaught, leaping out to a 9-0 lead to start the 2011 campaign. Johnson scored four goals in Maryland's opening run and Kristy Black added two. Freshman Beth Glaros capped the drive with her first goal as a Terp at 14:30.
Richmond did not counter until a Mary Flowers' goal at 12:06. Flowers, the 2010 A-10 Midfielder of the Year, led the Spiders with three scores on the day.
Maryland headed into halftime with an 11-4 lead but was stymied slightly in the opening minutes of the second stanza. After being outscored by Richmond 3-1 in the first 10:40, sophomore All-American Katie Schwarzmann turned up the pressure, scoring three consecutive goals in a four-minute span to spark a 6-0 Maryland run to close the game.
"This is a good way for us to start our season," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We started off really strong. After that Richmond timeout we slowed down the pace a little bit and we weren't shooting very well. At the end of the second half, I thought we were able to pull through after I called that timeout and we got things together to regroup and get going."
Schwarzmann ended with a career-high five goals on the day. Junior Brittany Dipper made five saves and senior Katie Gallagher tallied three caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs to lead the Terps defensively.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday with a road contest at Delaware at 4 p.m.
