March 21, 2011
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Maryland men's tennis team was in search of its third victory of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent, but Louisville got four wins in singles to outlast the visiting Terrapins, 5-2, Monday.
The 28th-ranked Cardinals (10-9), who played nine of their last 10 on the road, won at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles, including Austen Childs 6-1, 6-2 victory over Maryland's Maros Horny, the 75th-ranked player in the nation, in the top spot.
Childs, the No. 16 singles player in the country, also teamed with Adam Donaldson in doubles and that duo upended Maryland's Jesse Kiuru and Jan Surovic 8-5 to sew up the first point of the match.
Sergio Wyss and Jesse Kiuru picked up the wins for the Terps (9-4) who earlier this season had victories over nationally-ranked Cornell and William & Mary.
Wyss battled past Viktor Maksimcuk 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while Kiuru came back from a set down to defeat Andrew Carter 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 6 position.
Alejandro Calligari's straight-set win (6-3, 6-3) over the Terps' Tommy Laine at No. 5 singles clinched the match for Louisville which snapped a three-game losing skid, though all of the defeats occurred to teams in the nation's top 35.
The Terps will turn right around and play at 14th-ranked Kentucky on Tuesday. Maryland faces the Wildcats at noon.
