LEXINGTON, Ky. -
John Collins and Tommy Laine picked up singles wins, but it was not enough for the Maryland tennis team to overcome the 14th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats who downed the Terrapins, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon.
The No. 43 Terps (9-5) battled from start to finish against a lineup that featured four ranked singles players, but the Wildcats (17-5) jumped ahead 3-1 and clinched the match on Alex Musialek's 6-3, 6-2 win over Sergio Wyss at the No. 2 position.
Musialek entered the match 47th nationally among singles players and Eric Quigley came in as the fourth-ranked performer in the nation, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Quigley pushed past Maryland's Maros Horny, who is No. 75 on the singles chart, with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 slot.
Laine picked up his second victory of the season against a ranked opponent, battling back from a set down to upend No. 77 Anthony Rossi 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at the No. 5 position.
Collins posted a straight sets win (6-2, 6-2) over Kentucky's Brad Cox, a triumph which cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Terps were not able to gain the doubles points, but their 70th-ranked duo was victorious as Collins and Laine teamed up for an 8-4 upset win over Alberto Gonzalez and Tom Jomby, a tandem ranked 41st nationally.
The Terps head back into Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend when they make a two-match road trip.
Maryland will play 22nd-ranked North Carolina at 2:30 p.m. Friday and then make a short drive to face No. 10 Duke at noon Sunday.
Terp Notes: All five of Maryland's loses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents ... the ITA released updated team rankings Tuesday afternoon and Maryland remained at No. 43 ... Kentucky serves as the final non-conference opponent of the season for the Terps who have eight ACC tilts remaining (four at home/four on the road).
