TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
A late surge by Maryland's men's tennis team was not enough to topple No. 41 Florida State on Sunday. The Terps (10-10, 2-7 ACC) lost the early doubles point and were unable to come back despite a hard fought effort in singles play. The Terps lost the match, 4-3.
John Collins, who was slated at No. 2 singles, earned a point by upsetting No. 91 Clint Bowles, 6-4, 6-3. Also victorious in singles play was Sergio Wyss. After losing the first set to the Seminoles' Blake Davis 2-6, Wyss battled back to win the next two sets 6-2, 7-5 (5). Wyss was positioned at No. 4 singles.
Andy Magee had an impactful afternoon, winning two matches on the day. First, he partnered with Jesse Kiuru to defeat the Seminoles' pair of Jordan Kelly-Houston and Blake Davis, 8-5. Later, he upended Florida State's Anderson Reed in singles play, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Florida State's Vihad Mirzadeh, currently ranked No. 21 in singles play, was able to beat No. 86 Maros Horny, 6-4, 6-4, to seal the match for the Seminoles.
Although the Terps were edged out of the victory on Sunday, Maryland's head coach Kyle Spencer feels the experience will assist the Terps moving forward on the season.
"We played a tough FSU team on the road and just fell a little short," said Spencer. "FSU has been a top 25 team for many years, and to beat a program like FSU you need to do the little things well, and we just didn't do the little things well in some spots today. We had some very good performances in singles from Andy, John, and Sergio. I am proud of our effort and energy and I know that this program is headed in the right direction. We are very excited to return to the Cole Courts next weekend to close out the regular season against NCST and Wake."
The Terps will be back in action again this Friday as they face ACC-foe North Carolina State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in College Park.
