Terps Drop First Spring Match To Virginia

April 10, 2011

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team participated in the 15th Annual Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Terps, the cause was much better than the game.

For the first time in three years, the Terps dropped a game to Virginia. While at times the Terps maintained good possession of the ball, they were unable to make the Cavaliers' goalkeepers have to make any real quality saves. And at the other end, Virginia was able to do more with their possession, resulting in three goals and a 3-0 win.

"We learned a valuable lesson today," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky following the game. "We cannot just show up and expect to win games without playing responsibly. If we don't take care of the little things, and play with an absolute commitment to win at all costs, we will be in for a rude awakening next fall - and we need to embrace that fear. What makes us great, is playing with an edge, and today we had no edge. We took too many plays off, and that's just not ok, if we're interested in being good."

The Terps continue their spring slate next weekend in Kirkwood, Del., as they take on Villanova and Navy in the Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation's Inaugural College Classic. Proceeds from this event go towards helping fight childhood cancer. The Terps will play back-to-back games vs. Villanova and Navy, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16.
