COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
No. 19 Georgia Tech got strong play from the top of its singles rotation and held off the 44th-ranked Maryland men's tennis team Sunday to post a 5-2 victory.
The Terps (10-8, 2-5) were in search of their fourth win of the season over a nationally-ranked program, but the Yellow Jackets (15-2, 6-1) got singles victories at position Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 6.
Kevin King's 6-3, 6-3 win over John Collins at No. 3 singles clinched Georgia Tech's fifth-straight win and kept them in third place in the rugged Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
"We're competing at a high level," Maryland head coach Kyle Spencer said. "Georgia Tech is a top-20 team which is well-coached."
Maryland's Sergio Wyss nearly had his second win of the season over a ranked foe. Wyss was in position for a victory at No. 2 singles, but Juan Spir, the 67th-ranked player in the nation held off a second-set match point to post a 4-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (10-8) win.
Jesse Kiuru kept his hot streak going for the Terps, winning for the fourth consecutive outing in singles. Kiuru downed Magin Ortiga 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Maros Horny, who is ranked 86th nationally, lost in singles, but he did team with Jan Surovic in doubles for one of Maryland's best wins of the season.
The Horny-Surovic duo knocked off Spir and King, the 14th-ranked tandem in the nation, by a score of 8-7 (4).
However, the Yellow Jackets won the other two doubles matches to secure the first point of the match.
"Our guys came out with energy," Spencer said. "Georgia Tech just came out on the road a little stronger than we were today."
The Terps have four regular-season matches remaining. They will make their final road trip next weekend. Maryland plays at No. 28 Miami at 2:30 p.m. Friday and then faces No. 47 Florida State at noon Sunday.
"We just have to get better at the little things," Spencer said of the rest of the season. "I'm proud of the progress. We just have to keep fighting and get better in practice."
