COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland women's soccer coach Brian Pensky announced today that Kristen Schmidbauer has transferred to play for the Terps in 2011.
Schmidbauer, who will have three years of eligibility with the Terps, comes to College Park after spending her freshman season at UNC Greensboro. The native of Glenend, Md., played in 22 games for the Spartans making 18 starts.
"I'm excited to be joining Maryland because it has outstanding academics, has a great team with a great coaching staff and has the perfect atmosphere for a student athlete," said Schmidbauer.
She led UNCG and the Southern Conference with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. Schmidbauer led the Spartans to an NCAA tournament bid after scoring the game-winning goal in the conference championship game. She was named to the all-conference second team and the all-freshman squad.
Prior to college, Schmidbauer was the 2009 Howard County Player of the Year at Glenelg High School and an All-Met selection. She helped lead Glenelg to back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008 and earned all-state, all-region and all-county honors.
Schmidbauer was a six-year member of the Maryland state ODP team, winning three consecutive Region I ODP championships. She was a three-time selection to the Region I ODP team, playing at the ODP regional event in Pomona Calif., and traveling on three ODP international trips, going to Brazil, Italy and Russia.
She played club soccer for the Vista Shockwave, helping it win the Virginia State Cup championships in 2008 and 2009. Vista was also a regional semifinalist in 2009 and won the US Club National Champion in 2008.
Schmidbauer is the daughter of Alan and Carol Schmidbauer and was a four-year Dean's List student at Glenelg High.
