Terrapins Welcome 13 to Squad

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Coming off of an undefeated regular season, the Maryland Acrobatics & Tumbling team welcomes 13 top recruits head coach Jarnell Bonds announced Friday.

The 13 newcomers own a total of 14 World Championship rings between them and eight were on the top three teams at the 2011 USASF World Championships in April. All of them hail from the nation's most competitive All Star programs, ranging from New England to North Carolina

This year's class includes Brittany Bartko (Elkridge, Md./Howard), Brittany Burkhard (Leesburg, Va./Heritage), Brea Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), Anna DiPaula (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), Lexi Eng (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), Dallas Faison (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth), Jenna Galuchie (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), Courtney Goodlow (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), Shelbe Mascaro (Elkridge, Md./Howard), Rosina Moscariello (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic), Briana Murphy (Waltham, Mass./Bedford), Gianna Pepe (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Mariah Rivera (Clifton, Va./Centreville).

Brittany Bartko
Base

About Bartko: Competed on Maryland Twisters F5 for three years...team won 2011 USASF World Championship in Disney...served as team captain in her senior year...F5 won All Star Challenge's Return to Atlantis in 2011...team won Jamfest Super Nationals in 2009...F5 was named Battle at the Capital Grand Champion in 2009...team also named Spirit Sports Grand Champion in 2009...team earned three full-paid bids to World Championships (2009, 2010, 2011)...also cheered on Howard's varsity team all four years of high school...high school team won county title and regional title all four years (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011).

Bonds on Bartko: "Both a base and a back spot, Brittany is a great addition to the Terps with her wide range of skills. Brittany's awareness and strength as a back spot will improve Maryland's partner stunting abilities. She isalso a very aggressive power tumbler with a great range of specialty tumbling passes. We envision Brittany performing a single pass in the tumbling round. We have seen Brittany train and improve her skills for years and we are thrilled that she will be adding her tumbling difficulty to our roster."

Bartko on coming to Maryland: "It is a bittersweet feeling leaving my All Star team, the Maryland Twisters F5, after being crowned World Champions this past year. Coming to Maryland has been a dream of mine since a very young age, a goal I set and pushed myself every day in order to achieve.  Maryland is a respected program known for its winning tradition and determined work ethic, which I look forward to being a part of."


Brittany Burkhard

About Burkhard: Competed on Maryland Twisters F5 for senior season...served as captain in her senior year...team won 2011 USASF World Championship in Disney...served as team captain in her senior year...F5 won All Star Challenge's Return to Atlantis in 2011...competed at All Star Legacy from 2003-2010 and at Spirit Extreme Angels from 1998-2000...was named All Star Legacy's Athlete of the Year in 2007 and 2008...competed on Heritage's Varsity cheer team all four years of high school...team finished top three in district finals all four years.

Bonds on Burkhard: "Brittany was a part of the World Champion Maryland Twisters F5 team. As a well-conditioned athlete, she is strong in all categories. She is an exceptional power tumbler with versatile passes, strength as a back spot and is very consistent with her standing tumbling skills. Brittany's wide range of talent and skills are exactly what we need in all sections of our competition format. We will train her for a single pass during the tumbling round - she has the form that will earn Maryland high scores."

Burkhard on coming to Maryland: "Switching over from All Star cheerleading to this 'new and improved' meet style is definitely going to be a change of gears for me. Leaving my team at Maryland Twisters is going to be very difficult because we were like sisters, but I cannot wait to meet, grow, and bond with my new teammates over the next four years. I have great respect for the University of Maryland and its eagerness to gain acceptance of this as a sport. I am proud to be a part of it."

 

Brea Curley

About Curley: Competed for Maryland Marlins for 11 years...her mother, Terri Curley, coached her team...finalist for Cheeleader of the Year...top performer...cheered on varsity all four years of high school...team won county titles and regional titles all four years...also played four years of softball...team won regionals in 2010 and 2011 and counties in 2011.

Bonds on Curley: "Brea is a very versatile athlete. She can fly, base and tumble. She will be a big benefit to the team with her strength in pyramids as a second level flyer. Having been coached by her mom for most of her life, she understands the big picture in working as a team to be successful. She is a powerful tumbler with great work ethic. Brea is pure athlete, maintaining a competitive softball career along with our sport. We are excited to see her athleticism on our roster."

Curley on coming to Maryland: "I am so excited to be a part of the Maryland team this year. It has been my dream to come here and compete since I was a little girl. My dream has finally come true!"

 

Anna DiPaula
Base

About DiPaula: Competed for Maryland Twisters F5 for junior and senior years...team won 2011 USASF World Championship title...F5 won All Star Challenge's Return to Atlantis in 2011...earned third at 2011 Battle at the Capital Tumble-Off...competed for Maryland Viper All Stars from 2002-2009...Viper's Venom team finished ninth at Worlds in 2007 and competed at Worlds from 2007-2009...Viper team won states...team won 2003 All Star Challenge's Return to Atlantis.

Bonds on DiPaula: "At 5-feet tall, Anna is a perfect match as a second level flyer. She is primarily used as a main base but also has numerous years under her belt as a flyer. This experience will be useful to the team as she now on the college level has the opportunity to compete 2.5 high pyramids. She will have the opportunity to utilize her strong tumbling skills as she is aggressive, powerful and has great overall endurance and strength. We look forward to training Anna in basket tosses as we believe her tumbling awareness and size make for a powerful combination in the basket toss rounds."

DiPaula on coming to Maryland: "Being a part of the University of Maryland's team has been on my list of life goals since the team was started. I love the program because the student-athletes are treated just like any other group of athletes at Maryland. Leaving a World Champion team is hard, but I feel that with leaving on such a good note, it's a great time to start a new chapter, and enter into a form of the sport that makes people respect it more."

 

Lexi Eng

Chesapeake, Va. • Western Branch

About Eng: Competed for Fame All Stars Super Seniors...competed there for seven years...team competed at the USASF World Championships from 2006-2011...team finished sixth at Worlds in 2010 and 2011 and won numerous national titles...cheered for years on Chesapeake's Varsity squad...team won Districts in 2007 and finished top four the other three years...also competed for school's gymnastics team for two years.

Bonds on Eng: "Alexis comes to us from Fame All Stars where she was featured as their primary flyer. Alexis has great presentation and form and her finesse in the air will prove valuable for the team in both the partner stunt rounds and team routine. She also has experience with the foam floor surface for tumbling so her transition next year should be smooth. We found Lexi to be a hard worker and quick learner and we look forward to that dynamic while we are training next season."

Eng on coming to Maryland: "It is bittersweet leaving my All Star team after five years but I'm really looking forward to taking the next step to being part of such a high caliber team like the University of Maryland. I've always enjoyed competition so I am extremely excited about competing in the new meet format. Though I had an opportunity to cheer at other colleges, the Maryland team's competitive success and challenge is what attracted me to becoming a Terp. I believe I bring a strong competitive spirit, drive, dedication and a good attitude to the team."

 

Dallas Faison

About Faison: Competed for Cheer Extreme for three years...team won 2010 USASF World Championship and numerous national titles...cheered on her high school's team from 2008-2011.

Bonds on Faison: "Dallas is a fantastic back spot with great height and solid partner stunt skills. She will be a great asset to us in the pyramid and partner stunt rounds with her height. The Maryland program performs partner stunts that heavily depend on the strength of a back spot so she is filling an important position.She comes from a program that trains multiple partner stunt combination skills. We look forward to Dallas transferring her experience to our team. As a World Champion in 2010 Dallas knows what it takes to perform at the top level."

Faison on coming to Maryland: "Coming from such a competitive level of this sport, I feel as though I am capable of taking on the many challenges that come with joining a collegiate level team. Although leaving a team with such a strong bond has been difficult, I am ready to form new bonds with teammates. Having always been a fan of the Maryland team, words cannot describe my excitement of being a part of the program. I look forward to competing in the new meet format and helping it become recognized as a sport."

 

Jenna Galuchie

About Galuchie: Competed for World Cup All Stars for 11 years and was on program's Shooting Stars team...team won three USASF World Championship titles (2007, 2008, 2009)...team won NCA Nationals in 2010 and 2011...named Shooting Star of the Year, Most Improved, Best Flyer and Top Performer over her career...was in a premier for the TV show Glee...performed in The One Awards in New York City...also performed in the 25th Jubilee Dance Transition Company with Angela Lansbury...competed on high school's Varsity team in 2007, 2008, 2009.

Bonds on Galuchie: "Jenna is a very experienced flyer who's size and strength will definitely benefit the program, she is compact and explosive. She is also a strong tumbler with great speed and form. Jenna's size advantage (height of 4'11) will allow her to perform unique combination entry partner stunts. We have been looking forward to adding Jenna to our partner stunts for years. She is a calm and confident performer who will thrive in the meet atmosphere. Jenna will fly at the top level of pyramids and her air awareness and technique will enhance our pyramid combinations. Maryland is known for our difficulty of pyramid combinations and Jenna Galuchie will raise that reputation to a whole new level."

Galuchie on coming to Maryland: "Competing for Maryland has been a dream of mine for many years now. I am excited about the new meet style because it really shows the difficulty in this sport and allows the fans to see each and every skill that is being performed before being put together in the full routine. Maryland was my first choice because it is in the forefront of changing this collegiate sport."

 

Courtney Goodlow

About Goodlow: Competed for World Cup All Stars for nine years and was on program's Shooting Stars team...team won three USASF World Championship titles (2007, 2008, 2009)...team won NCA Nationals in 2010 and 2011...Cheersport National Champions (2009)...UCA National Champions (2008, 2009, 2010)...seven-time World Cup Flyer of the Year...2008 Coaches' Choice Award recipient...2008 Shooting Star of the Year...named a Top 25 Cheerleader in 2008 by American Cheerleader magazine...recipient of World Cup's scholarship...cheered for school's Varsity team from 2009-2011.

Bonds on Goodlow: "Courtney has elite flying skills and is also a great tumbler. In addition to being a part of World Cup All Stars, she also has experience on the high school level so she is comfortable doing standing tumbling skills on all surfaces. She also has great air awareness and will prove to be helpful in basket toss rounds. Courtney has the all around skills to be an asset in every round with a particular strength in her graceful partner stunting. Courtney has performed in many high-pressure, competitive situations with grace and maturity. We look forward to having her competitive experience on our roster."

Goodlow on coming to Maryland: "After cheering for an All Star team for nine consecutive years, I am eager to continue this sport at the collegiate level.  Maryland provides the opportunity to represent a prestigious athletic program where I can utilize my talent, enthusiasm and leadership skills. I believe I can be an asset to the team because of my dedication, strong work ethic and experience in the competitive arena."

 

Shelbe Mascaro

About Mascaro: Competed for Maryland Marlins for 10 years...team finished fourth at the USASF World Championships in 2011 and fifth in 2010...team also won a full-paid bid in 2011...team finished second at Cheer Tech Spirit Nationals in 2011...in 2010, team named Levels 5 and 6 Grand Champion at Reach the Beach Nationals...in 2009, team competed in small senior division and finished 15th at Worlds with a full-paid bid...small senior Coed team won WSF Nationals in Atlantic City, N.J. in 2007 and Final Destination in 2006...named an Individual Champion in 2004 at the United Cheer Expo...cheered four years of Varsity at Howard.

Bonds on Mascaro: "Very solid base and tumbler. Shelbe has had experience tumbling on hard floor and is consistent with clean form in her standing and running tumbling skills. Shelbe's form fits in with the tumbling form that our team is known for. She will be a solid and dependable part of the program with her versatility as a back spot and base. Her ability to support in both positions will prove useful in a team routine. We will train her clean tumbling form to match for a group pass during tumbling round."

Mascaro on coming to Maryland: "I leave my Maryland Marlins family and All Star career after 10 years extremely proud and I can't wait to meet my new family at Maryland, where I've always wanted to be.  I will bring my outgoing, funny and hardworking personality to the newly named acrobatics and tumbling team and feel I will add great strength to the elements of the new meet format.  Now competitions will be even more athletic and intense and I invite the Maryland fans to come out to cheer us on as we compete to win more titles! Go Terps!"

 

Rosina Moscariello

About Moscariello: Competed for New Jersey Spirit Explosion most recently...also competed for Cheer Tyme and Maximum Cheer...spent total of nine years in All Star programs...named team's Superior Tumbler (2010, 2011), Best Flyer (2010, 2011) and Veteran of the Year (2010)...also named team's Cheerleader of the Year in 2008...named Totaly Talented in 2009...team won numerous national titles...cheered four years for school's team...team won its conference in 2008...also was a dancer at her school.

Bonds on Moscariello: "Rosie was utilized as a point or primary flyer for Spirit Explosion All Stars in New Jersey. She has beautiful body positions and exceptional flexibility. She has great air awareness and can be showcased in the basket toss rounds. She is also a very strong tumbler and has strong standing tumbling skills that can definitely prove to be helpful in team routine. We love Rosie's energy and enthusiasm and look forward to that passion while we are training."

Moscariello on coming to Maryland: "Being a part of the University of Maryland program has always been my biggest dream to fulfill. Leaving my spirit explosion family is very heartbreaking since I have made many unforgettable memories and friends there, but I know that the Maryland Acrobatics and Tumbling team will be just as an amazing chapter in my life with new and exciting challenges to embrace. Competitively, this new meet style will be a lot different, but I am very excited to experience it and be a part of a new cheerleading evolution."

 

Briana Murphy

Waltham, Mass. • Bedford

About Murphy: Competed for East Celebrity Elite in junior and senior seasons...prior to that competed for JAG Cheer for six years...team finished fourth at 2011 USASF World Championships and won 2011 UCA Nationals...served as captain in her senior year...won East Celebrity Elite Award...cheered for high school's varsity team for football all four years and basketball three...served as captain in both junior and senior seasons...earned Best Jumps and Best Tumbling awards.

Bonds on Murphy: "Coming from a very strong program, Briana is used to performing under pressure and executing her skills to benefit her team. At 5-feet tall, her small stature is power-packed. She is also a high school flyer so her familiarity with both flying and basing helps her to be a great second level flyer for our team. Briana is reaching the peak of her skills and we look forward to her drive and ambition on the Maryland roster."

Murphy on coming to Maryland: "Being on this Maryland team has been a dream of mine ever since I began competing the sport years ago. I am thrilled to know that my strong determination, and excellent work ethic has allowed me to be a part of one of the most skilled teams in the nation, and I cannot wait to experience all the new and exciting challenges that come with being a college athlete. Although it will be difficult leaving the comfort of my All Star team, I feel my years of hard work have prepared me to turn the page and begin this next chapter in my life."

 

Gianna Pepe

Staten Island, N.Y. • Tottenville

About Pepe: Competed for World Cup All Stars for past 10 years and spent last three on program's Shooting Stars team...team won USASF World Championships in 2007, 2008, 2009, as well as NCA National titles in 2010 and 2011...team also won Cheersport Nationals in 2009, UCA Nationals in 2009 and 2010...named World Cup's best base in 2008 and 2010...recipient of World Cup's scholarship.

Bonds on Pepe: "Gianna is from World Cup and is bringing the Terps her phenomenal basing skills. She is one of our best incoming bases and we are eager to get her involved in both the partner stunt and pyramid rounds. She has a great reputation for hitting her stunts under pressure. Gianna has the confidence and skill ability that can instantly contribute to our line up. We are looking forward to utilizing her solid skills and adding to our start difficulty value in the partner stunting round."

Pepe on coming to Maryland: "I leave World Cup Shooting Stars with mixed emotions, pride for all we accomplished, and appreciation for all that my coaches have taught me. I will miss my teammates, but I look forward with nervous anticipation as I begin the next chapter of my life at University of Maryland. I come to the Maryland Acrobatics and Tumbling Team as a determined athlete, eager to learn from the best. I am a team player and I am enthusiastic to train with such talented athletes and coaches. I feel that the meet style of competing will allow me to showcase my strength as a base.The definition of a base is a foundation, a point from which something can develop, a support. I look forward to being part of the foundation for the Maryland Acrobatics and Tumbling Team. GO TERPS!"

 

Mariah Rivera

About Rivera: Competed for Maryland Twisters F5 for junior and senior years...team won 2011 USASF World Championship title...F5 won All Star Challenge's Return to Atlantis in 2011...cheered four years on Varsity at her high school...team finish top two in districts and top five in regionals all four years...team also finished ninth in the state in 2009...named team's Best Tumbler all four years and Best Flyer in three years...did Varsity gymnastics in 2007 and 2008...named team MVP both years...finished 9th and 7th on beam (2007, 2008), 6th on floor exercise (2007) and 11th on bars (2008).

Bonds on Rivera: "After overcoming an ACL injury in 2009, Mariah has the work ethic and drive to be a champion that the Terp team is looking for. She is a solid overall athlete with both the ability to fly and base. She is a flyer in the basket toss section for her World Champion F5 team and we hope to be able to use her basket talents in our rounds for the upcoming season. Mariah also has the tumbling form that the Maryland team is known for. We look forward to her tumbling scoring well for us."

Rivera on coming to Maryland: "I am honored to be a part of the University of Maryland team. Leaving the Maryland Twisters was sad but rewarding at the same time. As the 2011 USASF World Champions we worked extremely hard to accomplish our goals. I look forward to working with the top coaches in country and bringing the same hard working and winning attitude to the Maryland program."
